We’re currently investigating an issue related to the forum theme and styling that is impacting page layout and visual formatting. My school had subscriptions to a few online services, they would submit the papers to these databases and it would look for similarities. If it was a original document it would keep it in the database still in case someone else tries using it.. But they would only check the paper if the teacher did not think you had the ability to write the paper you submitted.
A friend in college and I were working on the same topic. We were fully allowed to talk together, share ideas, and try to write our own papers afterwards. That asshat decided to cut and paste much of my document into his. I guess the TA noticed very quickly while reading them.
And a lot of times the teachers will have read papers based on a topic many many times before... and as such will probably have read the more common sources. It's not that hard to pick out phrases which are exact copies from a book sometimes.
