Not enough people know about usenet for it to really be a threat. Napster/Kazaa/etc were easy to use, which made them attractive to the masses. It actually takes some (very little) skill to use newsgroups, so they aren't as popular.

Ya. Good job dropping the dime on yourself. Now the RIAA (that monitors public forums) are running around their office cheering:

We're gonna get em! We're gonna find out what this secret 'usenet' things are, and we are gonna SUE THEM!

MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Thanks for the tip, NERDS! WE PWN JOO!

or something eerily similar 😛

The reality is that there would be no way for them to really take effective action against the usenet due to the way it works and propogates. Even if they managed to purge the US service providers of binary groups they could not affect the ones outside US control.

Oooo... Now we are daring them by telling them they cant do it.
AND we keep bumping the thread.
Keep it at the top! Wooo!!!

If they close it, I'll just get my Christian music from somewhere else.... like IRC they might be able to monitor 1% of EFNET, good luck on finding other secret networks.

EDIT: I meant BACKUPS
