Doomsday is the common reference. If we lost, we're doomed. If we won, the Germans are doomed.

I suspect that there is a more high end meaning, though. Perhaps Eisenhower's middle initial? Or somthing like that.
 
D-Day stands for... Day. Just as H-Hour stands for... Hour. Then you have a count up, or down. D -10 or H -10 for 10 days or hours before the mark. D+10 or H+10 for 10 days or hours after the mark.

So the term D-Day means the Day of the Day, just as H-Hour means the Hour of the hour.
 
ok thanks. it's a pretty good book btw if you haven't checked it out. lots of interesting facts--for example, we used midget submarines to send in soil sample teams under cover of darkness before the invasion to make sure the beaches could support armor.
