$117,000 average salary

I heard the long shore men and crane operators at the docks make a lot of money
even if there are no containers to move

What does a longshoreman do?

moves those shipping containers at ports

Yeah, my neighbor used to run those containers out of Charleston during the week and be home in Greenville every weekend while making $125,000 a year. A truck drivers dream.

Only thing is that it's rather unsafe because a lot of times they're up pretty high in the air with the crates or are vulnerable to being flattened by a crate.

I knew a guy who's father was a longshoredude. Apparently the only way in is by knowing someone...

That's what the article said... sorry no link as its a paid subscription and I just get the paper version of WSJ...

it's a dull job. i've seen them in action. basically, you sit a couple hundred feet in the air, and look down for a few hours moving those containers.

if it's not simply dangerous, usually hard work / long hours make up for high salaries. It's not a free ride.

I've heard many people brag about how much their friend on Wall St. makes... how young they are and what car they drive. I wouldn't trade my life for their hours.

I would say a soldiers, police and fireman take more risks... but they don't command those high salaries... Labor Union FTW!!

Longshoremen.... read it in Wall Street Journal today...

Time to look for a new career 😉

There's several contractor jobs out here where you can make well over $100k a year without a college degree.

And you don't necessarily have to work for it...and you won't get taxed on the first $100k of it...

Firefighters, the guys who sticks a thermometer into the meat in our cafeteria every 15 minutes, the guys who run our gyms...

Alaskan crab fishermen can make $10k in a month if the catch is good. Of course, it is one the most dangerous jobs in the world, and involves working 20 hours a day or more if need be.

Like someone else said, there's no free ride.

I've been a crane operator for most of the past 30 years, and while it's a decent way to make a living, it's not always a cakewalk. Never ran the container cranes at the ports...but I've done a little of everything else. Tower cranes, overhead/ganrty cranes, derrick barges, truck cranes, etc. My average wage (Yes, I'm unon) is about $35-$40 /hr, with a super benefits package that is about $15./hr.(medical, optical, dental, pension, vacation pay, etc. with an annual average of $85K. Not bad for a high school dropout with only a GED huh?
I've often used the job description that it's hours and hours of boredom, punctuated by seconds of sheer terror...when things go bad, they do so FAST! While the crane operator is in control of the load, you can't always see what the load is, or how it's rigged, and you often get some pretty stupid/untrained/unknowledgeable people on the other end of the hook who haven't enough common sense to do things right.

Here's a link to the article from Forbes on this:

$117,000 for playing 3D Tetris sounds good to me.
