1155 Running Hot

I just built a new rig with a Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz.

I'm cooling it with the Xigmatech Dark Knight.

Mobo: Asus P8P67 Deluxe (B3)

The CPU seems to be running hot, idling at 47C. I'm going to try to re-seat the heat-sink (as it doesn't feel very warm), but I'm not sure that the temperature is being reported properly. After two hours of playing Crysis 2, the temperature only increased to 50C.

1.) What are the normal temps for Sandy Bridge CPUs?
2.) Does anyone suggest a better heatsink?
3.) What do people use these days to track historical temperature data from within the OS?

Thanks!

Since you're only stating one temperature and not one for each core, I'm assuming that you're looking at the hardware monitor in the BIOS, which I think doesn't correctly report the actual temperatures the cores run at in Windows.

Should try downloading/running either RealTemp or CPUID Hardware Monitor and reading the temps that way...

My 2500K cores are idling at about 30-35C with the cooler in the sig.

Since you're not even overclocking, what's the point of using an aftermarket cooler, much less the 2600K?

And Crysis 2 probably isn't an adequate means of maxing out your CPU. Run Prime 95 and see what you get for temps.

Your idle temps are about 20c above mine, and like I said, Crysis 2 is a taxing game, but it doesn't put your CPU under full load, so, I'm betting you'll see temps much higher than 50c under full load with Prime 95.

1) Under full load, my 2600K's cores dance in the 56-58-61-62 range. While idling, the CPU throttles its speed and voltage way down, so my idle temps are in the high 20s. My load voltage is 1.392, which is a tad high, and I plan to adjust when I feel like dicking with it again. Lower voltage will yield even lower temps for my system.

2) I don't know much about that cooler. Mid range CPU coolers work very well for Sandy Bridge chips. Although I use a very high end cooler with a 3 fan setup, many people here have had great results with the Cooler Master Hyper 212. Sandy Bridge has almost eliminated the need for expensive high end coolers.

3) I just keep track of my temps in my head. My system is just about 2 months old at this point, so I know what my normal load/idle temps are.

I'm at 4.2 on air on mine and my temps are in the 30s at idle and not even 55 maxed out.

I'm fixen to put a Corsair H70 on it and crank it a bit more.

I plan on overclocking once I break everything in 🙂.

I ran Prime95 with RealTemp running and topped off all four cores in the high 60's. Based on all the info I've gathered, that's way too high for stock; time to go shopping. Thanks, everyone.
