11 Colleges Even Its Alumni Wouldn't Recommend

Credit card declined is grounds for non admittance. =)

That's got to be it!

Murder your parents and in jail? Welcome to UTEP!
I.Q. of fungus and unable to tie your own shoelaces? Welcome to UTEP!
Been in a vegetative coma for 15 years? Welcome to UTEP!
Beagle with mange and no housetraining? Welcome to UTEP!
No money? Get out you loser!!

Huh - I find it interesting that Eastern Michigan is on the list given that has an outstanding reputation for its k-12 degree programs. Guess its all the other idiots that brought it down esp when compared with the little known UofM school just down the road 😛

Some of those schools are probably pretty shitty. Ones like Devry are very good quality but cost a small fortune to attend - that is probably the low ROI rating for that one.

Luckily, mine wasn't on there 😛

there's so many "colleges" out there now. I see tons of commercials on TV for all these different online colleges.

Three schools on the list really surprised me-CUNY, UM-Boston and Johnson and Wales-especially Johnson and Wales, which has long held the reputation of the best culinary school. I guess it's alumni are upset at the shocking discovery that being a chef is long, hard work and frequently doesn't pay that well.

I got a master's from Strayer (#2 on that list) - needed the piece of paper for permanent certification (teaching.) A complete waste of money, and problem after problem. On a 1 to 10 recommendation scale (10 being I recommend it), it gets a 0.

One of the courses I was required to take was an intro to business course (it was a prerequisite for some of my master's courses). Even though I had already taken the master's courses, I couldn't graduate without the undergraduate pre-requisite. So, each week, I had to answer 1 or two discussion questions and take a 10 question quiz. The quiz questions were dated - that is, the correct answers changed over time. Thus, many of the answers in the quiz were no longer correct. i.e. outdated information. I alerted the prof to this for several answers; he stopped responding to my emails. The midterm contained 50 out of the 80 questions we had seen thus far (and the correct answers weren't there.) The weekly discussion questions were something like this: "Do you think it would be good for Comcast to buy Time Warner?" (Though, the questions weren't actually that topical or relevant.) Typical answer: "Yes." Typical response: "I agree." Or, "No." "I don't agree, I think they should." That's for 4 credits of undergraduate work. Plus, a (iirc) 3 or 5 page paper at the end of the course.

There were, of course, some better questions for discussion in the Master's courses. The amount of blatant plagiarism in the responses would make your head spin. Professors did not participate in the discussion. Nor, apparently, were people penalized for plagiarism. When the rampant plagiarism was pointed out, it was ignored.

Oh, and then the surprises from "professors" who were idiots. Midterm exam - you may only enter the exam once & must complete it once you start. "Answer 7 of the following 10 questions. Each response must be at least 2 pages, not including references. You must have 3 sources that support each answer." Huh? What? How about a heads up that our midterm was going to take an entire day (research with a minimum of 21 sources).

Surprised that City College of NY was on the list. It's 6k/yr to attend, and the average starting salary is 47k? I mean it's not Columbia University, but I'm not sure it belongs in a list with DeVry

Strayer being on the list can't be good news for Jack Welch who sold his business school to them a couple years ago. I've seen him pimping the school on CNBC once or twice.

True dat.

Within the industry, Johnson and Wales is a joke to everyone but, corporate food service who love all the poor little rich kids that are tailor made to be policy princesses.

Wow surprised to see UTEP on there. That is actually a real college serving a fairly large area with few other options. Some of the rest are the equivalents to the sub-prime mortgages in the student loan bubble.

That shows the value of higher education in El Paso. Pretty sad, the place is forever just going to be a drug cartel zone and chip dip maker with that attitude.

I don't think people understand that even after graduating culinary school, you're not going to be even in the middle tier of chefs. You start at the bottom and work your way up.

Hey, I was one of that 1% not admitted.

...My check bounced and had to pay my bank a $40 insufficient funds fee. I also had to pay UTEP their NSF fee and also take a FICO credit hit.

At least my prayers were answered when Devry and Trump University accepted me!

I don't know...
Is there one of those "Bad Credit? No Credit? No Problem!!!" signs next to their main entrance street?

Wow, 99.8%.

"Escaped convicted felon? No problem!!!"

Yes, it's right next to the "Se Habla Espanol!" sign.

To be fair, El Paso is the West Texas border town where Marty Robbins fell in love with Feleena, a Mexican Girl in El Paso. Signs that say "We speak Spanglish" would probably serve more people. 😛

Johnson and Wales is totally focused on front of the house. No one, even silly rich kids parent's, would consider paying their tuition for culinary education when they could go to the cia.

I always heard DeVry was a joke, like UoP. Is that not the case?

I wasn't a joke when I went there. Define "joke." It is a properly accredited university and at least as of a couple of years ago had more accreditations than the IL state schools.

DeVry at one point was a tech school. About a 15 years ago they gained the required accreditation to be a University and have class levels and curriculum that transfers to and from other schools.

Feel free to take a look:

I'm surprised an actual university like UTEP would get lumped in with that group. I've never heard anything negative about the school but that acceptance rate is pretty ludicrous.

I would wager most satellite schools have a fairly high acceptance rate. UTEP is ranked #1 in 'Social Mobility', whatever that means, and has 70% Mexican-American student population.
