11.5g "Clay" composite 500 poker chip set @ Costco (B&M)

Credit to a couple of posters over at FW. I know lots of ATers like poker so I thought I'd post it here.

Costco has started carrying poker chips. According to posts at FW, there are two different sets,
One comes in an orange box and comes with a dealer button, 5 dice, and 2 packs of Bee playing cards.
The other comes in a black/green box, has the dice but no dealer button, and 2 packs of Bicycle playing cards. At least one person says the chips in the black box are of a higher quality, but I can't verify that as my Costco did not have the orange set.
Both sets come in lined silver aluminum carrying cases.

Some people are saying their Costco has them for $79.99, but most say it's $59.99. I picked up the black box set at a local Costco (Tigard, OR) for $59.99. They had just gotten them in today for the first time.
The color distribution in the black box set is 150 white, 150 red, 100 blue, 50 green, & 50 black.

These chips are similar to what you would find on eBay, i.e. they are made in China of a plastic composite made to feel somewhat similar to clay, along with a metal insert to give them some weight.
The design on the chips I got is a dashed ring in a groove around the center, with 6 stripes on the outer ring of the chip along with the 4 suit symbols, one at each cardinal direction. Quite similar to this, but with more stripes and fewer suit symbols.

Anyway, it's a decent set and a nice gift for yourself 🙂P) or a poker playing friend. These are not casino-quality, but they are great for most people's purposes. With shipping, these are usually $65-90 on eBay plus you don't get Costco's awesome return policy so I think this is a good deal.

i hope the orange are not of inferior quality, but none-the-less im happy with what i bought today (orange boxed set) ... in southern cali, there are only a few places to get it. industry, chino (computer said 7, but when i called they could not verify), and alhambra with 20 of them. this item number is 796912 i think.... anyhow it was 59.99... sometime later i will pull out the trusty envelop scale and see how much it weighs.

oh the item is still active at costco's but it will take them "several weeks for their buyer to organize to buy for all the costco's"

Yup, I bought it as part of a gift for my best man. Like many people, he used to play poker occasionally but now plays online a lot and we have tourneys every once in a while.

I just picked up a black/boxed set this past weekend in Austin. Pretty nice chips set of chips.. now to find some cards..

Even better deals at surplus computers.

Just click the link and search for "poker". They have sets of 11.5g chips with tables, cases, etc. I saw their deals in an email ad from them. If I didn't already own 1,100 chips I would probably jump on this myself.

Enjoy!

Just a warning about getting them online like that. $20 shipping for a $65 chip set.

Samsclub has them here, forgot what they looked like and the price, but they were clay.

Alright folks...not here to refute any claims that the Costco chips are any better than the 5stardeals or any other genuine casino quality chips, so please save your flames.

However, I did manage to buy both the black box and the orange box sets, and I will have to disagree with SteveGo's opinion that the black box set is "decidedly better". But it matters what's important to each individual I guess. All I know is, the black set is going back.

BLACK SET = DELUXE POKER SET
Pros:
-11.5 Grams (I used a scale to confirm)
-Just a sliver thicker than the ones in the ORANGE SET (I didn't have calipers, but I guess one micrometer thicker)
-Sound more natural, less "clinky"
Cons:
-Suit design looks "painted" on.
-No dealer button(this is nitpicky, but it's a fact)
-Case is larger than the ORANGE SET (again, nitpicky, but space matters to some folks)
***Material is VERY soft. I could scrape and dent the edges with my thumbnail! If I kept scraping long enough, the chip would have looked like a cookie! These chips will wear out much sooner. I'm afraid to even accidentally drop them on my patio for fear of the edges being irreparably damaged.

ORANGE SET = THE ULTIMATE POKER GAME SET
Pros:
-11.5 grams
-Suit design seems to be a separate "fill" in the mold(this matters to me, because I don't want to see any "flaking" of the patterns later on.
-Smaller case (about 3 inches shorter, so easier to store?)
-Dealer button included
-Material is much more solid. I could not make an appreciable dent in the edge with my thumbnail. I am almost positive these will not show noticeable wear sooner than the BLACK SET.
Cons:
-A sliver thinner than the BLACK SET
-Definitely sounds more artificial due to the "clink" of the metal insert

That's my two cents on the Costco sets folks...

Confirmed $59.99 price at the Long Island City (Queens) Costco location. Appeared to be the "BLACK SET = DELUXE POKER SET" as listed above.

Thanks for that.

Do you have the Costco numbers for each set, just to confirm?

what section of the store did you see them in? I don't think I've ever seen poker chips at any sam's near me.

Thanks! I hinted to the wife that I wanted these and I got them for my birthday! I got the black set and they seem to be perfect for an amatuer friday night get together. Thanks for the post!
