I'm still haven't found out what caused the actual outage, but the search problem is being fixed. The search indexes needed to be recreated and everything reindexed, and this is being done right now. Ideally this should only take a couple more hours.

Fast because no one's hammering the SQL databases with queries using the search engine. Fast because fewer people are logged in now due to the shortage. I doubt anything technical was done, as it seems this outage was unforeseen.

As for Ryan Smith...where's your custom title? And what do you mean by "Reindex the indexes", that's a bit redundant, no? Are you just taking us for a ride?

Some of this morning's search problems seem to have cleared up - at least at the moment. The archived searches I've tried to run have come up with results - which is an improvement - but they are only covering through 2005. Baby steps.

That should have been "and everything reindexed", I missed a word so sue me.;) As for a custom title, I have no need to bother with one since I'm on these forums so little. If you don't think I am who I say I am, you're free to email me at the address in my profile.

Glad to hear everything seems to be up and running again.

I have bombed out twice now while browsing the forums though. The page would not fully load. Just sits there until I hit refresh. And then sometimes the forums just won't show up.

I know I know, back to the troubleshooting my own sh!t board...

Sounds to me like you have a TCP/IP problem. But first check your hosts file and see if there are any anandtech entries.

If not, you could try the Winsock IP Fix, or reset your stack with this command (in XP):

netsh int ip reset c:\filename.ext

(you make up the filename and ext, I use newstack.log).
