Some country should throw a few nukes at it.

To paraphrase the brilliant comic Eddie Izzard,

"That's how you build an empire. Fly to the newly discovered planet, stick a flag in. "I claim Planet X for Earth."
And they're going, "You can't claim us. We live here! There's five hundred million of us."
"Do you have a flag?"
"We don't need a flag, this is our planet you bastard."

Some of like how Columbus discovered America...

My professor last year in a GE class said Pluto will probably eventually be demoted to asteroid or something other than a planet cuz it doesn't really satisfy all the reqiurement to be considered a planet (I forgot what they were though ;)). So this new planet may replace pluto...?

sounds like they should do this, but it's highly unlikely

Go figure that it'd be on AT where some douchebags would debate whether or not it's a planet acting like they're more qualified than the people who are trying to sort this out right now. It's been reported as a planet, so, for the time-being, that's what it is. Your epenis isn't growing any at all, you're just looking like more of an ass, so stop.

It is not a planet, just another large object in the Kuiper Belt along with Sedna, Pluto, etc.

It's 1½ - 2 times bigger than Pluto.

Size is not the only factor.

Is that what your last girlfriend said?

I am sorry for you. :p

Gee, I didn't think I had to add "In determining if a celestial object is a planet" but I forgot what forum I was posting in.

Haha oh yes, what ever was I thinking in saying that none of us here are qualified to debate others on the subject? My mistake; won't let it happen again. :p

Seriously though, some people need to fvcking check themselves out in the head and realize they're nowhere near as intelligent as they think they are.

Not everyone agrees pluto is a planet. AFAIAC there are only 8 planets. Pluto is a Kuniper belt object and doesn't meet the requirements and neither does that half a dozen other objects in the belt people have tried to call planets at one time or another.

You are no exception so sthu and put your own epenis back in your pants. Until the IAU says it's a planet, it isn't. I am not at all impressed with your gratuitous name calling.

Edit for spelling.

Only way I can remember the 9 we have is with that damn saying of: my very educated mother just made us nine pies.

I blame grade school for making me remember that. :(

yeah but you remembered it wrong... where's Saturn?

What the hell are you talking about? Gratuitous name-calling? I called those debating douchebags, and said they looked like asses. Sorry if that offended you, though I can't say I care much about impressing you.

If the articles are reporting it as a 10th planet, what are people supposed to think? Are they automatically supposed to know "Oh hey, it's not an official planet yet even though the article that I read said that it's a new planet and they're debating whether or not it should be classified as such." Seriously, who gives a sh1t about semantics when it's just interesting. Worry about semantics when more details are given.

No offense taken :) Judging from the articles linked it sure sounds like they have closed the case on this and it is a planet. But NASA does not decide nor does Brown, the guy who discovered it. Though I am sure he would like to since it would put him in the history books forever. Who can blame him. Probably would have some major bucks attached to something that significant. The IAU makes the call and hell, they are still debating whether or not to declassify Pluto as a planet and if they do, this newly discovered object will surly suffer the same fate despite its larger mass. Its 44 degree elliptical orbit leads me to think they will classify it as a KBO and not a planet but like you mentioned, with a few exceptions on the board I am sure, non of our opinions really mean jack as we are not qualified. I am just as interested as you and think that with the VLT going online now this type of discoveries will become more common place. There is a lot out there we have not been able to see that hopefully we will be able to now. Cheers.

I didn't read all of the posts, so I don't know if this has been said before.

"Brown himself has argued in the past for Pluto's demotion from planet status, because of its diminutive size and eccentric and inclined orbit.

But on Friday he struck a different note. "

Sounds like he wants to call it a planet just so he can get the damned thing named after him. He didn't discover Pluto, so he argued against it.

Yeah you gotta watch that KuNiper belt.

Also, there is no strict definition of "planet" as you seem to be implying in your post.
