10TB HGST Drive not showing up in disk management?

I got 2x new HGST UltraStar 10TB internal drives. I've installed plenty of drives, but never 10TB. I tried plugging in both one at a time through my SATA ports and neither are showing up in Disk Management where I normally initialize them.

The 8TB HGST worked fine, as have my past 6TB drives... is there a mobo/sata limit or something for 10TB? Specs in sig; built summer 2012.

The one and only reviewer says "had to tape Pin 3 of the SATA power connector to get it to spin up", whatever that means...

NOTE: I have tried "rescan disks" and I have used this SATA cable and power on other HDDs just moments ago.

Should I return the drives?

I stopped buying HDs from Amazon, they are the worst at packing them.

I believe those drives have a new non-standard way of powering them completely off, using some of the interface connector pins. It's some new Hitachi thing. Might want to research if that's why they're not spinning up.

Actually, just looked it up, and it appears it IS the new standard (SATA revision 3.3)
So, just need one of those molex adapters per drive, OR a PSU that has the updated SATA rev 3.3 SATA specs.

Some legacy power supplies that provide 3.3V power on SATA Pin 3 would force drives with Power Disable feature to get stuck in a hard reset condition preventing them from spinning up.

Ok, one potential problem here that may make this a non-starter for me: I have a hot swap bay in my case that has a built in back-panel. Not the new SATA standard. I could use the Molex adaptor the one of the drives, but it looks like if I want to use a 10TB in the hot-swap bay, that option is totally out? Is there a version of this drive that uses the previous/older Sata Rev?

Odd, because I have a He8 drive and it DOESNT do this - perhaps I got a different version of the drive...??

Looks like that one has "ISE" (Instant Secure Erase) -- maybe the 10TB was a different one?

Hmm, yeah, I can see this feature causing some snafus.

Are they going to start producing desktop PSUs with SATA power leads that lack the 3.3v line on them? Label them "HDD only", kind of like "fan only"?

Are there any devices that accept SATA power, that actually use the 3.3v line? I don't think many / any SSDs do, except possibly M.2 SATA to SATA adapter cages, and possibly USB3.0 card that take power from the PSU.

Ok, found this, but I am confused, because it appears the 10TB model number is identical in Table 1 (non Power Disable feature) and Table 2 (with power disable feature):

I need to order the one WITHOUT the power disable feature so I can use it in my legacy hot swap drive bay, and I have no use for that feature anyway...

Sounds like another alternative if I can't find the right drive for a good price ($350) could be to put a piece of tape over Pin 3... but I'd really prefer to just get the correct model!

Since you have no intention of using the power down feature, wouldn't it be simpler to just disable/disconnect the 3.3v feed to the entire hot swap drive bays, assuming they have a common feed as most do?

The part #'s are different, but the model #'s are the same.

So, just have to make sure you look at the part # to know which is which.
Really odd of them doing it that way...I would have thought they would change model # as well.

Which case is it that has the hotswap bays? If you look at the connector, you should see wires coming from it, and you would just remove the 3.3V wire. If you can take pics of the connector of the case, it would make things easier.

It's an Internal Hot Swap Bay as part of the Lian Li A71F Full Tower Case. I'll have to get some pics soon.

Any downside to disconnecting that power outlet? All my other drives in the bay work fine.

Nope, no HD that I am aware of uses 3.3V, so it wouldn't be an issue.

One disk, NOT the new disk, is sitting maxed out at 100% even though it shouldn't be in use by anything,

System boot up time used to be 20 seconds and now maybe 1-2 minutes.

Is there anyway this could be related?

Barring of course the simplest option of finding the drive without the feature at all..

WADR and no offense intended, but if you have to ask, it's probably not the best answer to your problem, as it could lead to more complications if done incorrectly. Probably best for you to stick with the molex to SATA power adapter.

Install CrystalDiskInfo, and see what it is showing for your drives.
Is this with win 7, 8, or 10?
Also check event viewer, and see if you see any warnings/errors.
