$10k US, two years old. Best car for me? Must be foreign.

My honda crapord is dying and I have two options:

1) Brand new car for about $10K US
2) Nicer car for $10K US, but older as well.

I don't want to go more than 2 years old so that I still have a year left on the warranty of whichever car I buy...so I won't be buying an early 90's BMW or anything like that. So really what is the best foreign car I can get 2 years old for about $10K? I was hoping for something with some power but its looking like a tough thing to get with those requirements...

your choices are somewhat limited for a new $10K car.

I'd say get something a couple years old. If possible, get something with around a year left on the bumper-to-bumper warranty. That way if something goes wrong, you're still covered.

Bleh. Foreign cars. Only good foreign cars are BMWs, and the occasional Saab, and since you're unwilling to purchase something more than 2 years old, they're not really an option.

Get a Ford Mustang. They depreciate very quickly, so a two year old one can probably be had for around $10K.

Three words for you: Rear Wheel Drive.

I agree with Cybersax. The only foreign car I would ever personally own is a BMW. And before people start flaming me, I am not blindly prejudiced. I have driven many cars from every manufacturer out there . I worked in the automotive field for 7 years.

Whatever, A FWD Jetta will outhandle a mustang.

Look into a used Nissan Maxima, awesome car if you just close your eyes until you're inside of it.

One word: Reliability

You're in luck, I love these questions.

Coupld for you first.

any fwd/rwd/awd preferences?
4 door or 2?
if 2, with our without hatch
need a 6cyl or will ya be happy with a good 4?
gas milage important?
How flexible can you be on the age? Because if you can't, you'll be hurting bad. I won't try and put you in anythign like a 92 beamer, but what about a 96 somthin?

How about a chopper (motorcycle)? Preferably a loud, tweaked, Harly Davidson low rider. Then change your name to Christian (because that sounds like a true biker name). You could be a big, bad biker like the guy in my avatar. Heh, sorry I can't help ya on the car thing but I thought I would throw a little humor into this...

Volkswagen GOLF (the previous model) depreciates really bad. So you might want to check their prices. (If you like VW)

The only domestic I'll ever be seen in is a Dodge Viper. That or the limited edition Corvette.

My four-banger Prelude will kill most V6's and V8's on the road, and it is THE best handling car for under $30k, and ONE OF THE BEST handling cars out there period.

I agree with most of you though, $10k isn't that much for a nice car. A Nissan Altima would be really nice, and Nissan motors are almost impossible to kill.

"My four-banger Prelude will kill most V6's and V8's on the road, and it is THE best handling car for under $30k"

How do you define "kill"?? On the straight, with V8s??
Or on the track?? Preludes are not that great in sports car racing.

off the line, track.. doesn't matter. And how can you say Preludes are not that great in sports car racing? They might not be as fast as some of those RX-7 TT or Mustang Saleens or whatever, but then again it doesn't cost nearly as much.

You give me the same amount of money that one of those cars cost, and I'll buy a brand new Prelude, intake, headers, exhaust, cams, pulleys, titanium rods, pistons, a turbocharger, and a nitrous system. I'll probably still have money left over too. With all of those modifications, I can guarantee you that it'll take on any Saleen or RX-7 TT.

You WON'T have money left over. Do you know how much aftermarket Honda parts are? You'd think with as many companies specializing in Honda performance parts, they wouldn't cost as much. However, they will all cost you an arm and a leg. Honda Preludes are nice and all, but they aren't fast enough to chase down Camaros or Mustangs stock. They're nice cars though, I'll give you that.

So if I had a choice? 2000 Honda Prelude SH, or 1993 Mazda RX-7, I'd take the RX-7. It's cheap now, save the insurance, and there are plenty of aftermarket parts for it, if I ever decide I need to go faster. However tuning an RX-7 is like tuning a supercar; you have to ask yourself, "Why?".

Back to new, or two year old $10,000 car. Hmm...Hyundai? Kia? Really, you can't buy anything good with $10,000 if you want to go new. Two years though, I'd have to say '98 Mazda Protege EX, or '98 Honda Civic DX.

On my next car, I'm gonna get plates that read, "HondaSUX". That or, "RICESUX". I just wanna get my message across, that being, rice burners suck.

A $21k 2000 Mustang GT with:

<< intake, headers, exhaust, cams, pulleys, titanium rods, pistons, a turbocharger, and a nitrous system >>

...would destroy a Prelude w/ the same mods. Hell w/out the turbo charger and NOS those mods could get it into the deep 11's/high 10's. Not to mention a Prelude equipped with the same features costs more. Hell the $$ left over would be enough for everything but the t/c + NOS.

What's all that anti-Honda thing about ? I had a CRX two-seater convertible, now have an Aerodeck 1.8 VTi and blow out all that BMW, Mercedes and VW crap on german Autobahn(no general speed limit). Considering these cars at least one third more expensive, where's your problem ?

I'm wondering the same thing? Why do you have to hate?

The fastest cars in the world come from Hondas. Have you ever heard of a guy name Steve Papidakis? He drives the fastest Honda chassis car in the world.. I think it's a 7-second Civic or something insane like that.

I'm just saying, if you do all that modifying to your car to make it go faster, which one will look nicer? Personally I'd rather be seen in a Prelude than any domestic, and which engine do you think will fall apart after 100k miles? My last Honda had 171k miles and I absolutely could not kill it.

Honda aftermarket parts are expensive? Hardly. Maybe for a new generation Accord or something, but there are so many things out there for the Integra and Civic and all them, it's not even funny. Me, I could get an AEM Cold Air Intake for about $200 brand new, exhaust for about $500 or so, and headers for about $400. My friend had to pay $1000 for his exhaust, $250 for his CAI, and another $1000 for his headers (he drives a 1999 Honda Accord V6 Coupe).

Just depends on what you want. If you want some cheapo Iceman or something, then it's gonna cost much, much less than anything Mugen you buy

Another riddle to me is the fact that over here the self-appointed "High Quality" car manufacturers just give you a 2-year-warranty, Honda does 3 years. If their(BMW, Mercedes) cars are that solid, why is that ? I'll stick with Honda.

I like cars with quirks. Gives the car personality. Hondas are impeccable cars. The reason why I don't like them is because everyone has them, and they're treated like rich people mobiles now. If you have a honda, you're hip. Bleck...

Hondas are good though, my friend has an '84 CRX that runs like a champ, and many of my friends have Accords and Preludes. Nice cars, not quirky enough.

BTW, Hyundai has a 10yr/100,000 mile warranty...they must have some mucho trust in their cars.

Hmmm...I am sitting here ever so patiently waiting for the mechanic to call me back and tell me what on earth is wrong with our Honda! I mean, enough is enough...they know us by name. 🙁

Its at 115,000 miles now. It "appears" to be in good condition, only owned it half a year, but repair costs are killing me. Its barely cheaper than making payments on a nice car. It very much gives me a bad impression of hondas. I know most people do well with them but a guy at work with a '90 civic (85,000 miles) was telling me how in 2 years he sank $3k into it, and when he got rid of it it needed another $600.

Basically all I need is a car with at least _some_ bumper to bumper warranty left...I don't mind paying to get one put on, but it needs to be full and comprehensive, so I wanted a fairly newish car. Since my price range is $11k at the most, basically the best I've found so far is a '98 Acura 1.6 (not a bad car at all!) and maybe a 2-year old jetta, but then the acura is a much nicer car and I'm weary of the depreciation on a VW. Furthermore, it must be foreign and it must be at least semi-big (so not a golf).

Civic and Protege are in my price range, but as good as a protege is putting it side by side an Acura there appears no competition, at least in my eyes. And although a civic is the natural choice for anybody in my situation, given that the Honda Crappord has done me a gave injustice in repair costs I'm not interested in a Honda again (Yes I know acura and honda are kinda the same, but anyway...) I realize I may have just gotten unlucky with a lemon (as we speak its getting the transmission checked out for grinding...4th time to a mechanic since january), and Hondas are supposed to be nice, but an Acura looks a lot "richer" to me as well.

One note:

Cars that tend to lose their value very quickly, and are therefore very cheap used car buys - tend to lose their value very quickly for a reason.

Obviously the opposite holds true for cars which hold their value very well...

Just a thought.

Personally, I'd go for a Honda. Cheap and usually lasts for a long time. But these cars are really for reliability, not for speed or style (unless you fix it up). For $10,000, you don't have much choice.

Or, buy 4 Geo Metros and duct tape them all together... almost as good as one car. 🙂
