Question 10Gbe networking with RJ45 ports

Setting up a small 10GbE network for the office between a Synology NAS and a couple of PCs (2-4).
Planning on getting this switch

With the switch, can only the SFP+ port be used for uplink? My NAS has an RJ45 10GbE network card.

No, you can use port 8 or any other port that uses rj45 since the switch supports 10G on all ports.

Like samir said, any port will work. It's important to notice that port 8 and the sfp port are shared. If you use port 8 rj45, you cant use sfp port, and the opposite.

Get this version instead. It's only a few dollars more, but can be fully managed if you need the flexibility down the road. I use it at home and it's excellent.

I'm not seeing where that switch supports NBASE-T or "multi-gig". That appears to be a 10GbE-T-only switch.

Have you considered going 10G fiber, the switch you linked costs almost as much as a 16 port 10G fiber switch.

Shoot, let's go big time if we're going full 10G. There's 48-port 10G SFP with QSFP+ uplinks (40G?) for $500 and full 48 port 10G SFP switches for only $300. And there are rj45 sfps out there, so you could run a mix of dac, rj45, and fibre in the same swtich. And this is enterprise gear so these were thousands of dollars new.

My only problem with your suggestion is the possible fan noise. I bought a 24 port 10G switch with 6 1G ports for $300 on ebay. I love it it works great, but can't stand the fan noise. It's so bad that I only have 1 power supply plugged in to lower the noise. I'm thinking about getting a rack to put it in to hopefully block some of the noise.

Your first switch has 2 fans, and all but the Brocade ICX7150-C12P have fans in the second link. If the 7150 had more than 2 10G ports, I'd be all over it.

The 7250 is only 50w.

If it has a big enough heatsink you could use some really weak fans to cool it.

Minimum is good. I have fans in both my Ubiquiti router & switch, and they are very quiet. That's why I was looking at one of their 10g switches, as reviews say they are almost silent. My Quanta LB6M isn't that loud with only 1 power supply running, but the fan has a high pitch whine to it. It drives me nuts!

The 7250 seems to be a 1g switch. Am I wrong about that?

Ah, that's a good point about the fan noise. There are certain switches that respond well to fan swaps and other fan mods to make them quiet. I've seen a lot of the guys on the servethehome forum do that and end up happy with the results.

I saw a couple of guys do a fan swap on the Quanta LB6M on the servethehome forum, but the temps rose. That scared me off, because it was summer when I read the thread, and my air conditioning is off when I'm not home. Maybe I need to try it.

If the fans they used were variable, I would simply floor them when you're not home. Is there fan noise at home when you're not there? Does it matter?

The fans are variable, and get jet engine loud when it's hot. I have the temp at 69F right now, and the fan is at it's normal speed.
