1090T what temp

I have my 1090t oc'd to 3.9, room temp 26, idle temp 38. Prime overheats it real fast. I wonder if I have too much thermal grease. Not sure how much to use with the Hyper 212 with the space between the copper pipes and the aluminum. Playing Skyrim right now and it never gets much over 55.

My house thermostat is set to 72 (22C), my PC is at idle right now. My computer room is upstairs and probably a few degrees F cooler than the first level. If we are to believe Core Temp, at idle I am bouncing around between 24-25C.

I just ran six instances of Prime95 (the max heat output test) for 15 minutes, temps were 45-46C.

I am running my 1090T @ 4.030GHz with the NB/L3 @ 2.6GHz (260x15.5) with 1.48v. I am using this cooler. So to me it sounds like you are a bit warm, but since we have different coolers it is hard to say, I'm not sure if the cooler you have is better or worse than what I have. Anyway, there are some numbers to compare.
 
I wish I could get near that. I never mounted a cooler with gaps that this one has between the copper pipes and aluminum heatsink. I researched on line and got conflicting opinions. Fill the gap or not fill the gap. I don't get errors in Prime or LinX, but when the temp gets above 62-65 I get nervous and shut it down.
 
Rice sized drop or line of thermal paste is all it takes regardless of what type of cooler you use, unless you have an uneven base that prevents proper contact. Depending on what type of TIM you use, you may be better spreading it out manually with a razor blade or the like, or just use the old fashioned pressure method - rely on the HSF mounting pressure to squeeze the paste out.

Try that, if your temps aren't any better then go to a different cooler. The 212 EVO was the next revision of the 212 line and eliminated the gaps and changed the fan slightly.
 
That is a perfect temp,, 55c ,,, even 60c ,,

its when you hit the 70's and above where CPU life will diminish. gl
 
I asked this same question about a 1055t I was running on that exact motherboard. prime95 was overheating my chip as well and I was using watercooling whereas it had been totally fine on my gigabyte am2+ motherboard. not sure if it was a motherboard issue but I no longer have that CPU.

Unless that cooler gives specific instructions that are different than the normal procedure, I would apply the thermal grease the same as any other cooler.
 
There is a big review of different thermal pastes and how to apply them. Here is a link to a specific page that shows the reviewer's technique for "filling the gaps" prior to assembly when it comes to heatpipe-based heatsinks like yours:

I just applied a new thermal paste to my 212+ using this method, but I used an old plastic credit card to spread the paste into the gaps like I was using a putty knife.

I'm interested in where you saw equal results whether the air gaps were filled or not? Seems to me that any air gap would be worse than if the air gap were filled with thermal paste, because air is a heat insulator and thermal paste is a heat conductor?
 
What case you have your rig in? What are your fan orientation and speeds during Prime?

I just got done playing with a 1090t and they are hungry hot fast beasts. I had to add a rear fan and go with aggressive fan delta's.

My case is a Tsunami Dream with front and rear 120mm fans.
All fans are pushing to rear of case.
CPU fan 1850 rpm @ 63 degrees
Case fans 1250 rpm
