For you people confused about the Maxtor ATA66 / ATA100 issue. It simply goes by the date it was made ( I forget the date but found it on the internet). I bought the Diamond Max Plus 40 30GB hard drive that said ATA66 (no ATA100 sticker on the box.) but when I looked at the manufactered date on the drive I knew it was ATA100, even though it didn't say so anywhere on the drive or packaging. If your drive was producted in august (I think) or later, then it IS ATA100. Anyone know the exact date can post it, or look it up on the Maxtor site press release I think.

More then likely even though the box does not say ATA100 most of the 40gb made since June 2000 are ATA100
The only real way to tell is to look at the drive model inside the box on the foil wrapper and if it has a H in the model #
it is a ATA100.

Anyone get one of these and run HDTach on it yet? For that price, if it's faster than the IBM 75 GXP in the right ways, then I'll probably switch :Q

I was suprised also when the thing came in with the ATA100 sticker on the box. But it did and it is. It is running in a server at my buddies house now. I wish I would have bought another.

I got a maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm but it cost $220 2 months ago.
I got an IBM 27 gig 7200 rpm in 1998 but it costed me about $350 back then.
I got an IBM 18 gig 7200 rpm in 1997 but it costed me about $380 back then.
I got a Seagate 4.3 5400 rpm in 1996 but it costed me some crazy amount then...

I got me a SCSI Seagate 70 MEG hard drive in 1993 and it costed me about $600.

The point? Technology cost more back then. :)

>This drive maintains 33+ mg/sec throught almost half of the drive. That's pretty darn fast.

what utility did you use to test this?

got a question... my mobo can only support ata66, does that mean that I can't use ATA100 harddrives?

or can ATA100 harddrives be able to run with ATA66?

thanks

Wow this drive is pretty fast. ACutally beats out my IBM 36LZX 10K RPM U160. However I have had the 75GXP which i think performs about the same as this WD. The 36LZX defitently feels faster, I guess because of its better access time.

Wut do you guys do w/ all this space? I only have my 18GB 36LZX now, and I only use like 5 GB. All my stuff is on CDR's. But I shold be getting a DV cam soon, so i guess this drive is a good choice.

18GB IBM 36LZX 10K RPM cost me $255
40GB WD 7.2K RPM costs me only $109, WTF!

But SCSI IS STILL THE BEST :D

Bundy must have written his own 64-bit OS for that Itanium cpu...yeahhh, thats the ticket...

i'm not getting a clear read on whether this is a good deal or not...for $110 + shipping this seems great...are there better deal out there or worth waiting for? is this drive that much worse than an IBM?

The coupon can be found on the buy.com site itself. On the front page click on the NFL and VISA pics. In there there should be a $30 off $150 coupon. It's avalible for all customers.

Personally, I'm saving every last dollar for a RAID-3 SCSI Adaptec 2100S card and twin Seagate Cheetah 10Ks in RAID 0. If THAT doesn't smoke anything out there, then I give up. I'm gonna have a blast though.

erm... i just called up the WB Rebate 888 number, and the rep says that if buy.com does not ship it by "30 days from the date of purchase" then we will not be able to get the $30 rebate since it would be past...

i thought someone said in this thread that we could do it just as long as we don't send in the UPC thing, they will send a letter back asking to put the UPC label... then we can send them the UPC?

did I read something wrong?

help me out here, if this works then ill buy it, if not... then my wallet limits me!

thanks
