When I started college I was thinking about being a CS major, but seeing how I hate math and there are no girls, I was planning to switch to business MIS. Then I'm taking a graphic arts class during the summer and I'm having a lot of fun, and I wanna do that for a major.

But I need an art portfolio which is going to be reviewed by the art department before I get accepted into the major.

I'm thinking about just minoring in graphics instead.

Now I have no idea what I'm going to major in. I wanna be happy with what I do, but also be financially stable. In the bay area I would guess that 50k a year would last me. I like computer hardware, but I hate math. So engineering is out of it. Should I just stick in business?

Just take a few business classses every year so you're progressing toward it if you decide to stick with it later. Meanwhile with the other classes just test around w/ different ones, and see if you find one that you like and can do.

I wasted 2+ years going straigh CS, but I hated it with a passion and switched out. I might have to stay for part of 5 now, but god did I hate CS. Don't stick w/ a major you hate.

just major in something that interests you. your job after college won't really use that much from what you learned so do something you like now while you have the chance

Well, other than using the computer all day, I don't know. Sad, but true.

Engineering would be cool to take because Engineering here is #2 in the nation. Not sure if this only applies to State Universities or every college.

Math really isn't my thing though. After Senior year of high school I just lost it.

So engineering is pretty much out of the picture. I checked everything related to engineering and they need most of the math courses which are offered here (SJSU).

I'd do that, but I really don't know what I like other than computers.

I'm thinking about doing an art portfolio, but it's gonna take a while to make.

What do you do on the computer? If you're creative and like art then go for graphics type stuff. If you prefer fixing broken pc's or might like the business side more consider IMS/IST/IT/CIS/Whatever

Having trouble figuring which side of your brain works better? You can make it through CS without too much trouble even if you're not very good at math. I knew guys in my class who finished with GPAs around 3.5 who weren't good at math AT ALL. You might struggle with the theoretical stuff, but practically you'll be fine. MIS wouldn't be a bad idea though.

Or just take a 4 year vacation - be a commucations major.

Uhh, I don't think many people like math either. I don't like it, but I worked my ass off to pass all of my math classes anywaz cuz my engineering classes needed it.

The thing is, with the engineering classes, you will be using math but not much as you would be in computer science. In computer science classes, they really deal with the thoretical parts of math which can be very, very difficult.

SO MY POINT is don't just give up on engineering just cuz you hate math. If you just hate your specific enginering major cuz you are bored or the department sucks then you should switch.

But if it's just math holding you back, then get tutoring, bug your professor or TA during office hours, make smartER friends and work hard for the 4 or 5 semesters for the math you have to take.

MIS is a good choice (what i switched to instead of IT) its more broad...and just think..as long as their is money there is buisness :)

as for the girls.....i just did my 2 year AS in Networking (CCNA & MCSE Prep) talk about being in a class with no girls and nerdy old men that talk about how comptuers were 10 years ago "well with my apple 2e it was like this"

wait im wrong there was one girl...but i think ill stick to my hand than give her a chance....yuck

Heh, well I didn't mention this earlier but I'm on probation right now because I failed PreCalc. I don't wanna try to take the class again and fvck up, and get kicked out of school. The class is 5 units, and it can really mess me up.

I'm thinking about accounting right now.

Wait, you failed PRE-calc?? And you wanted to be a CSCI major??? :Q

You realize that most schools require that CS majors do 3 semesters give or take of Calculus, plus discrete math, plus other math electives?

Accounting will require, well, accounting courses, finance, statistics, and other maths which still kick the crap out of precalc.

I'm sorry, but for your sake I hope that was a FREAKING DIFFICULT class otherwise you might want to look for something other than a numbers major.

Look into liberal arts, maybe.

I'm in the same boat. I'll be honest with you - I really like working on my yard, and designing landscapes for others, and I like meteorology too. Landscaping is just somehting I love to do, and weather is awesome and very interesting, but I also still like computers. I'm also currently getting my degree in CS, but I hated the programming classes, and I also hate math. It's just SOOO boring and mundane. After taking these classes, I've realized that CS isn't for me. The thought of working on/with computers for a living really depresses me, although I love building them for myself and keeping up with technology. Ahhh, I just don't know what to do with my life :frown:

Half my precalc class failed with an F. Three got As and everyone else passed with a C or better. For accounting, the only math class I would need is Finite math, and I've already passed that class last semester.

Yeah I learned that way too late. 2 years as CS...and I hated every minute of it. Now I'm trying to get into the history program but my grades are terrible...we'll see *crosses fingers* how I do.

Ah, phew. You scared me there for a minute. Lame teachers suck ;)

Accounting / business is VERY good to get into. They give you a good skillset and you are always in demand. Every one of my friends that took that route is gainfully employed.
