1080p Gaming with an 8800GT?

To be frank, you didn't offer anything constructive either. Aside from saying that Crysis ran with "good FPS" for you. Which I don't believe at all, considering the 8800GTX averaged 26.7 FPS at ALL medium at 1920x1200 and dipped down to 12 FPS. I find it hard to believe you got anything more than mid 20's (at best) FPS with those graphical settings at that resolution. If you consider that "good FPS" then I consider that trolling of another sort.

That is the thing; 30fps is fine, 60fps is great, and dipping far under 30fps is less than fine.

You can get the 1920x1080p monitor but your performance will not be all that great.
You will either have to lower the res or lower some settings.

You do need the 1080p monitor for your blu ray so just get the 1920x1080 screen and call it a day.

I play crysis @1680x1050 with my rig in sig everything high and stay 30fps avg.Sure I go under 30 fps when I am blowing stuff up and that is fine.I can just lower the physics quality and the shaders and be ok.

I am gonna say you are going on a long shot with the 8800gt at that res.I am not trying to be a troll or what not but you should get a better video card.I think you need something with more memory.Like a gtx 260 or a 1gb 4870.

I get by with my rig just fine for now but I will be getting a new video card next year

That is the thing; 30fps is fine, 60fps is great, and dipping far under 30fps is less than fine.

I suppose if 30 FPS is your min, or close to it then yeah, that's fine. But if you're averaging 30 then you've gotta be hitting the teens (even high teens) fairly often and that's just bad.

That is what I meant to say,I worded it wrong.

You dont need the 1080p display since even 720p is gonna look alot better then 480p
I am debating getting a blu ray drive now and I am only at 1680x1050.

Either way you look at it blu ray on 720p and above is gonna look alot better then a standard def dvd for sure.

I'll be more specific.

With all in-game settings at medium except a couple (can't remember which) that were on high, I don't notice any FPS lag in single player besides the occasional slowdown as a big explosion goes off or whatever. At 1920 x 1080 which is slightly less intensive than x 1200

I already replied to the op saying that I misunderstood exactly what he was saying. based on what I thought he said my comments were not out of line. all I was doing was being blunt. theres a reason sites do reviews and its no mystery exactly how two of the most popular and graphically impressive games run. it would be like going to a car enthusiast forum and asking how a Mustang GT runs in the quarter mile.

The OP asked for personal experiences with 8800GT's at 1920x1080. Benchmarks far from tell the whole story. From looking it up on Tom's Hardware or the like, he would be able to find that if might be lacking badly in the all maxed out test, but is doing fine at the mi settings test. Things he would not be able to find is stuff like "what settings can I run and still keep decent FPS?", or "When it dips, how badly so does it?"

While i dont think thats bad advice, i think we all know sometimes the more information you gather, sometimes the harder it is to decide.
So you just say screw it and ask for help.

I'd say dont be completly caught up in the "you must run in your monitors max native resolution craze"

We have three 24" LCDs here at our house and they all scale to 1680x1050 just fine.
Heck sometimes she has her games set to 1680x1050 and i think its at 1920x1200 until i check.
Then i usually say something cool like "why arent you running it maxed?, thats why we spend the money for high end parts!"
When in reality it really did look just fine scaled a step back from the LCDs native rez.

Now what other resolutions a 1080p monitor offers, i dont know, i'd assume 720p with nothing in between since 1680x1050 isnt mentioned here .
Dont know if i'd care to game a 720p. (maybe with lots of AA)

When i say fine-- I mean there is no real slowdown. I am sure it runs under 30 FPS. But crysis doesnt play that bad 20-30 FPS. Farcry 2 seems much more impacted by the 1080P resolution> I used to play at 1440X900 @ Ultra high settings with 2XAA. Now with High settings no AA. GTA 4 is the most system killer game out now...

You can add whaterver custom resolutions you like, and you can also configure your videocard to handle the scaling and always output the monitor's native resolution instead.

My 16:9 resolutions are:

1024x576 1138x640 1280x720 1366x768 1440x810 1536x864 1600x900 1760x990 1920x1080 2240x1260 2560x1440

I just edit the nvdisp.inf to add my resolutions whenever I switch drivers.

Hamster I might upgrade to one of those 22" 1080P monitors too. I'm going to be gaming on my 8800gs. No AA i think I would be good. For most games I turn on 4xAA max quality @ 1440x900 now with my games besides Crysis, GTA4 and Fart Cry2. 4xAA is like upping 2 resolutions. So if I was gaming at 4xAA @1440x900 it would be equivalent to 1920x1200 with no AA. I don't mind turning the detail to medium if I have to. It doesn't make world of difference far as game play goes anyway. If worst comes to worst you can always play 720P or 900p with all details cranked.

hated Fart Cry2 and deleted within a week of having the game. Never again ubiLost.

I understand you don't need a 1080p monitor but why wouldn't it help have better detail if you have 1080p monitor?

I understand you don't need a 1080p monitor but why wouldn't it help have better detail if you have 1080p monitor?

He's saying you wouldn't notice the difference in detail if you're sitting far away enough. You won't see a difference unless you're sitting close enough.
