1080p Gaming with an 8800GT?

I'm pondering getting a 21.5" or 24" monitor with my Christmas money, along with a blu-ray drive. I've got an E6420 running at 3GHz on a P35 board, with 2GB of of DDR2. I've got an 8800GT that I've overclocked a bit. Crysis and FarCry2 are the games that I'm concerned about...as well as future games. I suppose I can continue gaming on my 1440x900 monitor if the latest FPS is too much for my GT.

Is anyone else running an 8800GT on a 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 monitor?
 
Other than Crysis you should be fine long as you turn off AA.

The 22" 1080p would be perfect for smaller pixels with no AA or little AA.
 
why not look at the crap load of reviews? of course the 8800gt is going to struggle at 1920 with the two most graphically advanced games made...
 
It'll be fine as long as you don't expect to play brand new games. For a while I was buying high end video cards every 6 months to play new games... and swapping processors for new steppings that overclock better. Now I have a 24 inch monitor (1920x1200) and an 8800GT and I play games that are a year or two old... they cost less, they're all patched up and they run smoothly on my mid-range hardware. Much more enjoyable experience and you're still not THAT far behind technology.

The Crysis demo runs poorly on my setup so I didn't bother buying the game or Far Cry 2, so I can't tell you for sure. But don't expect more than 30 fps at 1920x1200 with anything bid low, maybe medium detail level settings.

not really that good of an option unless he got the second one for really cheap. if not he would do better to sell his own and apply that towards a gtx260. about the same cost with better overall gameplay. at 1920 the second 8800gt would not help in situations where 512mb starts to affect framerates.

Why not give out your HO without chiding people for not googling it first? I posted a similar noob question a while back and you posted the same crap in my thread too. Sometimes folks want real-world experinces with hardware not bench's from review sites..

I understand that but looking at reviews will clearly show you what to expect. facts are usually much better than opinions when it comes to computer hardware. I mean you have common sense and probably realize that those 2 games are not going to play all that great at such a high res at least not without turning everything way down.

This section is for advice and problems, amirite? I asked a question that I'm sure many others are considering as well. I did look at reviews here, on , and Tom's. Get over it. 😉 I was mainly curious to see if people regularly ran into issues playing games with that setup, not necessarily just with those two games. I realized that FC2 and Crysis would be a struggle, and I mentioned that in my OP. Please don't bother replying to threads if you're just going to be an ass.

Fair enough, there is a lot to read out there, I just bought a 4830 after extensive research, some sites tested it vs the 9800GT in a popular game, COD4 and the results were all over the place!. Makes one wonder if some sites are unfairly biased one way or the other. At least here one can get an honest evaluation from users to help spend their cash wisely. 🙂

I took that to mean that those were the main games that you were concerned about playing but you obviously meant you were concerned about if they would play ok. sorry if I sounded rude and misunderstood exactly what you meant.

 
I had fine experiences with Crysis and Warhead, but played them at 720p which honestly looked very good and is the same trick the console makers use to render their games smoothly.

The 8800gt is a fine card in most cases. Far Cry 2 wasn't very good performance-wise, but the game sucked anyway IMO 🙂

I just play WoW mostly these days.

I use a 8800gt on a 50" plasma. I run games at 1080p when they will run smooth like that, but use lower resolutions on many games to get better framerate. You don't have to run at native resolution, even if your display doesn't do good scaling on it's own, your videocard can. Granted, rendering at a lower resolution won't ever look as good as a higher one, but it beats using a smaller monitor and hence running at a lower resolution anyway.
 
It's worked fine for most of my games except Crysis and Clear Sky form the ones I've played. You usually have to tweak the settings a bit to stay above 30fps though.
 
Might have to turn down some settings to get some decent fps, I don't play FPS but AFAIK these games are vulnurable to low fps.

I'm with toyota and his somewhat scathing comment. I mean, come on, did someone really come in here to ask if a card that's over a year old is going to game just fine on two of the most graphically demanding games in existence .. and at 1080p? Seriously? Reviews exist for a reason, and no, your 8800gt will NOT do well with anything at or above medium settings for those two games at 1080p.
 
I don't have a 8800GT, but my video card is not that much stronger. I just bought a ACER H2243H 24" 1920X1080 LCD monitor. I love it by the way!!! I can play crysis on High with no AA and it runs fine @ 1920X1080. Farcry 2 High setting only, Grid (Maxed out with 4X AA) Both COD runs Great and GTA 4 ---- Well good luck with that game......

How do you define fine? Not even average 30fps and dropping far lower at times hardly seems fine to me:

GTA4 is much more about the CPU and system bus than the GPU. I'm almost always above 30fps in it at 1600x900 on my 8800gt with an e8500@3.8GHz.

This is half the problem. I'll never understand why people consider sub 30 FPS "fine" .. I mean, I understand that some people don't care about this eye candy or that, and that's fine .. but man.. anything under 30 FPS is just choppy and sluggish, you can't even argue that. I can't imagine considering that "playable."
 
my 8800GT, at stock speeds ran Crysis with good FPS at medium to high settings on 1920x1080. Can't speak for FC2
