1080i vs. 1080p

Philips has a special offer for us, but all of their HDTVs run 1920x1080i (interlacing) whereas the other TVs we are looking at run with 1920x1080p (progressive.) Trick is I don't know if the other TV runs at a higher FPS than 25FPS that 1920x1080i is supposed to run at.

Please assist asap as we are running out the door to buy a couple TVs and upgade our house to HDTV.

The best way to compare is to look at different TVs with 1080i and 1080p resolutions. Asking here will only start flamefests, sorry.
 
1080i if not watching fast action, and use it only on HDTV CRT's... 720p for LCD's and Plasma's and whatnot, if not able to get 1080p.
 
First off, 1080i runs at 30 (not 25) fps, while 1080p runs at 60 fps. HOWEVER, 1080i can show 60 FIELDS per second, which is essentially 60 fps but at lower resolution.

Aw crap, just do your own research before buying... 🙁

Okay... That still doesn't mean that non-1080p sets can't produce a nearly identical picture for the time being.

No. It's not even a fair comparison. 1080p blows all the other lesser displays out of the water.

Do you play games at 640x480? If you like blocky crap then maybe you can compare them. Otherwise there is no comparison and it isn't anywhere near "identical".

I'll take true HD over the others thank you very much.

 
I'd also like to add that 1080p will not become the std. for YEARS on cable.

These networks have already spent millions on upgrading all their equipment to the 720p/1080i spec, no way they would do that all again anytime soon.

On top of that, 1080p needs a lot of bandwidth.

It is still a nice feature to have for your blu-ray/hd-dvds I suppose.

well the question is whether there is any 60fps material. 1080p stuff is from film..and thats only 24fps really

Too bad, there are better HD standards on the loom in japan that offers 3 to 4X the quality of 1080p.

size of a country has nothing to do with creating a technology. and nobody rewires a whole country at once, you get major cities and spread from there. kind of like what Verizon did for VCAST... they installed that tech at select locations and slowly spread it.

either way... 1080p has brilliant clarity, but I cannot afford a 1080p set, I can only really afford 720p. Nor can I even afford a 37", where the 1080p's start coming into play. I will only be getting a 32", and from the viewing distance I will be at the majority of the time, 720p works just as well.
do I want 720p or 1080p? hell no. I want 1080p really bad. but, sometimes there are decisions that have to be made in a realistic matter, and blowing money on a 42" 1080p set is not even possible at the moment.
 
For fast stuff, I'd take 720p over 1080i. I'd also take bigger screen over more resolution.

Sure, a 1080p 50" is nice, but I'd rather have a 720p 100" (ie, a projector). Some 720p projectors with > 100" diagonals still look absolutely amazing.

Eh, it comes down to (for me anyway)

1. Price - 1080i is still cheaper
2. Size - Of the available technologies - lcd, Plasma, DLP, DLP is the only one I'd consider (LCDs have native resolution issues, as well as stuck pixels, and plasmas can have burn-in), an it's too big for my bedroom
3. Support - I watch OTA and DVD; no cable or satellite for me. I don't know of any OTA broadcasting 1080p. Also, it's iffy on if I get a HD-DVD player in the near future. I'll start buying HD-DVD discs, because they can be played in a normal DVD player unlike Blueray (though not the hi-def version of the movie, duh), but being stuck watching the standard res doesn't really help, regardless of the TVs theoretical capabilities. I have an upscaling DVD player, but again, I don't see much of a change in image quality.

With all that in mind, I got a 27" insignia HDTV CRT at Best Buy on Black Friday. $270 after rebates, it does 720p and 1080i (to the nitpicky yes, CRTs CANNOT do true 1080i, but it still looks better than 720), fits my room, unlike the smallest DLP sets for sale (for significantly more.) It's all I need/want it to do, and I'm happy. Will I go 1080p eventually? Yes. But when the price goes down on 1080p sets in general, plus I'm waiting to see what the next generation of TV technology is; I've heard they're rolling out new tech to possibly replace plasma or LCD screens.
