Originally Vega 56 had a lead over GTX 1070. (Vega faster ~5% average)
In later test Vega 56 and GTX 1070 were closer to tied. (Vega faster ~1% average)
Then 1070Ti tilts it in favor of the Ti. (GTX 1070 Ti ~6% average)

Those three benchmarks summations are cued up to run in the video.

But individual benchmarks swing back and forth a LOT. Which is why that summary page HW unboxed does is nice.

He uses a FE V56 card. The aftermarket V56 cards are more than fast enough to eclipse his AIB 1070ti.

Get the Sapphire Pulse.

Performance numbers taken from a review last month. The TI is ~10% faster than Vega 56 at 1440p, and about ~7% faster at 4k.

Even the aftermarket 1070 TI consumes 45 less watts than Vega 56, all while outperforming it.

Custom Vega cards have been hit and miss. The first Vega Custom review I saw, actually didn't do as well as a reference card.

This is the only Pulse review I have found:
https://www.computerbase.de/2018-03/sapphire-radeon-rx-vega-56-pulse-test/

It clocks/performs essentially the same as the Vega 56 reference cards.

There is a reason the Pulse is the about the cheapest custom Vega 56. It's the budget model, and pretty much the slowest custom AIB Vega 56.

I have an aftermarket Vega 56 (Powercolor Red Devil) and out of the box it’s 6-7% faster than the stock cards. Throw a simple memory OC and it’s pulling ~7100 pts in Timespy @ 210-220W which is faster than the 1070Ti.

No one is going to notice the difference between a stock 1070Ti and stock aftermarket Vega56 nor will they notice the difference when both are OC’d at 1440P.

For me, the thing that would kill the 1070 Ti is that it is a mini. I tried a 1070 mini once and didn't care for it. It gave worse boost clocks by default because of the compact cooling and turning up the fan to increase boost was too noisy (for me, I like my PC real quiet). That said:

If you want to go with a cheaper freesync monitor (cheaper than gsync), go Vega.
If you care about the added power consumption and don't mind (or like) that it is a mini, go 1070 Ti.

Performance wise I think you'd be extremely hard pressed to tell any difference between the two outside of a rare outlier here and there.

Overclocked 1070 TI's are faster than 1080s in many situations, which are always faster than OC'd Vega 56s.

Facts and numbers are irrefutable. All else being equal, the 1070 TI is the better buy at the same price.

Sure I mostly agree. Although OC’d and depending on the game/benchmark my 56 is equivalent to a stock FE1080. That’s not really my point.

My point wasn’t that an OCd aftermarket 56 is faster than an OCd 1070Ti it’s that the OP won’t be able to tell the difference as performance is very close. So other considerations become more important, like overall cost, quality of the card, and desire for freesync or G-sync.

Quite frankly you can lump the 1080 and Vega 64/FE in this conversation as well. Basically any of those cards are going to handle almost any game at 1440P just fine and none of them are going to be awesome 4K cards.

As others have mentioned it really comes down to whether you have/want VRR tech in your monitor. If you have a G-Sync monitor, one of the Nvidia cards would be the obvious choice and Vega if you have a Freesync monitor. If you plan on buying a monitor, those with Freesync tend to be $100-300 cheaper.

Get the 1070Ti if you want any of the following:
GSync
Eye candy like VXAO, HFTS, TXAA, PhsyX, Ansel, Highlights ..etc
Solid fps in VR games
Solid Game Streaming performance
Emulation of old games
slightly faster overall performance
Vastly lower power consumption (if you have a modest PSU)

Get the Vega 56 if you want:
FreeSync

I'm with the posters who say it comes down to FreeSync/Gsync yes or no. I've used both Gsync and Freesync on 144hz monitors and I can't tell a difference. One's just a lot cheaper. Everything else between the cards is largely comparable

Well there are some really bad freesync monitors out there. Terrible sync ranges, etc. Gsync just works. Gotta give them that. But it you buy a good freesync it's fine.

Yes, don't buy the first FSync monitor you see, you need some scrutiny.
GSync is so expensive it's on only "good" monitors.

Speaking strictly regarding crypto-mining capability, a Vega 56 out-performs the 1070Ti.
Although: at the the expense of more electrical cost & heat output.
Before electrical cost, a single Vega 56's Nicehash.com earnings currently (Sep. 2018) vary between 0.81 to 1.07 USD/day, depending on time of day.
Vega 56: 0.81 - 0.52 (electrical cost) = 0.28 profit/day.
https://www.nicehash.com/profitabil...69.74;a25=1.58;a26=12;a27=0.01;a30=1.6;a33=11

Before electrical cost, a single GTX 1070Ti earns an average of about 0.61 USD/day.
GTX 1070Ti: 0.61 - 0.42 (electrical cost) = 0.19 profit/day.
https://www.nicehash.com/profitabil...3;a25=1.365;a27=2.15;a28=5.13;a30=0.65;a33=10

Both cards at recommended tweaked & maximized crypto-mining power & frequency settings.
Electrical cost calculated @ 0.10/kWh.

Wow, I wish the Vega 56 was similar priced to the 1070Ti, I was shopping for a new GPU a few weeks ago and ended up getting the 1070Ti because it was over $100 cheaper than the Vega 56.

You really can't go wrong with either of them, I have Freesync monitors (triple setup for simracing) and the Vega would've benefited me but if you have a G-sync monitor (I don't) the 1070Ti would be better off, although Nvidia surround is far better than AMD eyefinity among other bells & whistles between the two where Nvidia just fares better with. Both are excellent in VR.

plus the 1070Ti would have a better resale value later on.
