You sir, are an idiot.

Just because it's a desert does NOT mean the sun shines 100% of time. There is night in the desert, moron. Also, WTF is perpetum(SIC) mobile?'

Conversion of energy from one source to another has NOTHING to do w/ perpetual motion. All you're suggesting (even IF we could get 24hr sunlight) is that the solar cells run steady-state indefinitely, such as ALL power generators do. The fact that sunlight instead of natural gas, coal, nuclear material is used is irrelevant.

Also, solar cells are NOWHERE near 100% efficient, in fact, they are so inefficient that even if run 24hrs a day for 30years, they would not output more energy than was necessary to make them.

STOP POSTING IGNORANT DRIVEL.

I was getting ready to flame your ass, ndee. But he said it quite well. So I will save myself the effort.

The thing that will never exist. You put energy into it, and it gives you more energy back.

Then no. Solar cells aren't that efficient yet, and the energy they can make comes from sunlight, which is also using up energy to get the sunlight to the solar cells.

Actually, that last statement is inaccurate. Let me see if I can dig up a link.

I haven't read it anywhere, it was brought up in a thermo class. The amount of energy necessary to convert quartz to solar-cell grade Si, then ion-implant P, B, Au, etc., and finally package the device, is overwhelming.

No, he's quite correct... unless technology has drastically changed in the last 2-3 years.

So very true. Thats why we need superconductor. And then we are all set to

True, solar energy is just energy conversion. Didn't think too much. But reason to flame like a friggin' I-M-RIGHT-AND-YOURE-NOT-YOU-IDIOT mentality? Some of you are really bored I guess if you're so flame-horny.

The flaming you see if because of your complete lack of common sense. You learned about a theoretical construct (perpetual motion machine) and completely failed to apply the concepts that you learned about. This is common with those that lack common sense and why they are often treated like idiots. If you cannot take a concept and understand it in the real world you probably shouldn't talk about it and should devote more time in areas where you are strong.

well, I didn't really learned the concepts or blablabla of whatsoever. I just remembered somehow that Perpetum Mobile means you put energy into it, and more energy comes out of it. That's all. Apparently, it isn't like that, so I misunderstood the "concept" of the perpetum mobile cuz I didn't remember it correctly. It wasn't like I was sitting in physics class and the prof explained what perpetum motion or that was. And that I thought "WOW, I'm a genious, I found the perpetum mobile!". Capiche?

Exactly. A solar cell would only apply in this case if, for every joule of sunlight fed into the cell, more than one joule came out. In reality, most cells achieve roughly a 35% energy conversion ratio.

OK, now it's clear. Actually, it should have been clear before I've even posted this thread ;)

Damn d00d, you don't have to go off on him like that. He isn't very well versed in physics so he asked a question. You aren't very well versed in latin, so you asked a question. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone came in this thread and called you an idiot because you didn't recognize the latin in his post.

Also:

Conversion of energy from one source to another has NOTHING to do w/ perpetual motion.

Sure it does. Let's set up a solar cell, a light bulb, a boiler, a turbine, and a fan such that the light shines on the cell and produces electricity which in turn powers the light. The light also shines on the boiler and produces steam, turning a turbine which turns the fan. Now let's wave our hands and convert this into an unending, lossless process. This is an example of a perpetual motion machine which converts light energy to electricity and back again, as well as turning light energy to thermal energy to mechanical energy.

I am going to refrain from the childish name calling and flaming however.

I see your point, kinda like seeing the chimps jerkoff at the zoo.
