I have a 5.1 home theater system that has only A/V outputs, no optical or anything like that. I'm using an SB Extigy (External USB sound card + live drive combo) that has optical in/out, headphones, mic in, line in, midi out, midi in, spdif in, digital out, and 3 ports for sub woofer + rear+ front speakers (Computer speakers I'm assuming).

Anyways I went to Radio Shack to buy an A/V Y-adapter cable. I plugged the A/V cables in the back of the home theater system and the 1/8" stereo phone plug into the extigy. I tried plugging in to the line-in and headphones port but I still get no sound.

Can anyone help me please? What am I doing wrong? Is the idea that I'm proposing even remotely possible? TIA.

Edit: New problem. Sound is only coming out from the center channel speakers. There is no sound coming from the front or rear speakers. *sigh* :(

Edit2: Ok nevermind everything seems to work well now. I think. I hope. Thanks for your help ATOT!! :)

line-in (on extigy) is for recording, it's the line-out (or "front speaker" from your description) that's for playback

Hmm... I plugged it in there and there's still no sound. This is weird though, I get sound from the laptop speakers if I connect the headphones port from the extigy to the line-in port of the laptop. But I can't get the home theater speakers to work no matter which port I plug into the extigy.

I'm confused. You're trying to play sound from your computer on your home theater speakers, right?

Yeah I set it to TV / AUX and the A/V cables are connected to the TV / AUX ports in the back of the receiver.

Also there's like a little switch in the back of the receiver that says "Phono" and "Line" what should I select it as? Line?

This home theater system was made in 1994 by the way.

try plugging it in a different source in the back.... and choosing a different option source

for my I have optical in/out on my receiver ... so I have a optical line going from my SB Live 5.1 + Hoontech add-on card to MD/Tape and I have it setup that way

Ya that's correct.

Yeah I just tested that with the 5 disc cd changer and it was weird. It will only play on the center channel speaker. No sound is coming out from the front or rear speakers.
