100pk Verbatim 8X DVD+R/-R $29. No rebate needed

Its pretty decent. The main ones I've seen cheaper that anyone can buy in large quantities is the 4x speed 100 packs at compusa they put on sale for $20 (no idea the media, probably cheap stuff) every few months.

Just a heads up. Amazon.com frequently has a sale on the retail 100-piece cakebox Verbatim DVD+/-R for $29.99 - with free shipping and no sales tax (for me). I just bought 2 100-piece cakeboxes a couple of weeks ago from Amazon (media code MCC-003 - great stuff) for $29.99 each.

So, if you're not in a hurry to buy right now, it might be worth it to wait for the next sale on Amazon.com for the retail cakeboxes. One note of warning though, Amazon.com does not pack the spindles properly so there is a good chance they will get damaged in transit. I received about 10 damaged disks out of 200, but Amazon gave me a 10% refund on my order so I ended up paying about $26/hundred for the retail Verbatim 8x DVD media.

PS: If you don't mind a rebate, Newegg currently has RiDATA 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 100 Pack Cake Box Disc - Retail for $42.99 with a $10.00 mail in rebate = 32.99 w/free shipping. That's a very good deal on 16X media, which is of course able to burn at slower speeds too.

Had same experience with Amazon. Badly packaged, spindle was broken and several discs were damaged. Didn't return though, discs were MCC, so decided to keep the order. Didn't get any credit for damanged discs.

Ridata DVD media are known to be of good quality. As with any media, the quality depends on the actual disk media manufacturer and type (media code). Ridata 16x DVD+R's at $32.99 per hundred (after $10 mail in rebate) is a good deal. If your burner can't burn at 16x, this media should still burn well at lower speeds. For quality of burn purposes, I rarely burn above 8x speed anyway. Unless you are burning volumes of DVD's every day, the timesavings between a 16x burn and 8x burn is small. Generally speaking, slower burns produce disks with fewer errors. I frequently burn at 4x (even on 8x to 16x media).

Verbatim can be counted on to sell quality media - although I've never tried their generic media. I wouldn't hesitate to buy generic Verbatim media - as long as it was genuine Verbatim media. As with many good things, there are counterfeit DVD media out in the marketplace. The best way to protect yourself is to only buy from reputable sources, which offer a reasonable return policy.

Taiyo Yuden media is considered by many to be the Holy Grail of media. Arguably is it some of the best media you can buy. Check the thread on this forum I've linked below for links to deals on genuine Taiyo Yuden DVD media. Shop4Tech regularly offers a 10% off code for 4x Taiyo Yuden value pack DVD media - which brings the cost of 100 4x DVD's at just under $30 per hundred - with free shipping. Some States have to pay sales tax (CA does), but it's still a very good value.

Some consistently good brands of media are offered by Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ridata,TDK, Philips and others. Again, the media code will let you know which disks are of good quality and which are not. Some good websites to read more about this are VideoHelp.com, AfterDawn.com and CDFreaks.com. I also recommend that you check the website of the manufacturer of your recording/playback hardware for their media type and brand recommendations. As always with PC burners, it pays to keep your firmware up to date with the latest firmware versions. You can obtain the latest firmware for your burner at the manufacturer's website or at VideoHelp.com.

There are other sites that offer firmware upgrades - some of them modified but I recommend you read up on modded firmware before you try it out on your burner. Using modified firmware can void your burner's warranty - or worse - it can permanently damage your burner if not updated correctly. I run both stock and modded firmware with my burners, and with the speeds now available on stock burners, there is not much benefit in using modded firmware - except if you wish to defeat the region code lock and/or remove the region change limit.

I know you asked a simple question, but I thought I?d take this opportunity to pass on some other info as well. Good luck and happy burning! 🙂

PS: For reading up on the above topics I suggest you start with the VideoHelp.com website first.
