Wow, I love the reporting on this.

"Investigators are looking into whether speed may have been a factor in the crash."

LOL

Well the officer obviously is at fault since he was traveling in the far left lane without passing anyone. The driver was simply trying to pass on the left like he supposed to
/sorry attempt at ATOT trolling.

He bypassed 88, was he missing enough plutonium or the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity?

(I know, wrong model car)

ya think the air bags worked??

That car doesn't have airbags.

Even a V6 Firebird will do 100. He would have had to start out a few miles back to get up to 100, but it can be done.

I'm on a forum for 3rd gen f-bodies (Firebirds and Camaros) and waiting for someone to post about either knowing this guy or him actually posting at some point.

Hmm, just rewatching it, I don't see the brake lights come on before impact at all with the center median/fence thing. The car jerks violently after that initial impact, and that's when it appears the lights at least flicker on for an instant before the thing hits the concrete bridge support beam. Maybe I'm just not seeing it correctly. This was also at 7:15 in the morning? Weird.

Hmm, I can't even come up with any potential reasoning for this under normal circumstances. I wonder if he went into a seizure or something and just laid into the gas like that one unfortunate trucker from a little while back did? It certainly doesn't add up, first off, that looks like an old crappy v6 firebird, around 100mph is probably top speed on it (they can be modded yeah, but most are rust-boxes by now), and 2nd, whizzing by a cop on the shoulder? Maybe he was suicidal.

My best guess - he passed the car that was behind the cop, but there was a car in front of him so he had to quickly move into the left lane (since he's doing 30 mph faster than other traffic). He didn't see the cop until he changed lanes, and at that point it was too late to slow down so he had to either rear-end a cop or try to slow down on the shoulder.

I think that sounds reasonable, but I'm kinda going back to my first reaction. I'm looking fairly close at the vehicle, and I don't believe I see the brake lights ever light up, which anyone trying to slow down would probably try. It almost appears that they flicker for a second early on a few frames in, but contrasted with the brightness of other things around, and the much brighter flash of the taillamps briefly as the car is tossed into the air on the center divider, I don't think the brakes were hit at all before the car goes flying.

I've braked on grass at half that speed (granted in a heavier truck), and it's like ice skating, I think we at least should have seen a slide/turn/wheels locking/anything. The video appears upon close examination to show nothing but a full bore plow right to the point of impact.

So I am back to considering that the driver might have conked out like that trucker that had a diabetic fit and went 100mph before crashing his truck in a similar fashion.

Clearly it is the policeman's fault. If the damn cops were not on the road then the driver would not have to brake to save himself from a ticket that we know is just BS. The family should sue.

I didn't see it, but I did hear a 3rd hand account of it. I was told that except for one quarter panel the car was ripped up into so many pieces you couldn't tell what it was.

He is going to have lots of trouble, medically and with the DMV / Police after he gets out of the hospital. License probably revoked, definitely suspended with multiple violations for sure. And that will send his insurance through the roof, cost wise. Plus a new / used car .. Insurance will not pay when they see how it happened.
