The battle system is fine.

They need to work on characters and storyline.

Good graphics are nice, but I'd still take Final Fantasy 2 (US, 4 Japan) with it's awesome characters and story over FF8 (haven't really played 9 yet, don't have a TV until September).

Get FF9, you'll absolutely love it. FF7 and 8 aren't 1/10th the game that 2 and 3 were. FF9, to my great pleasure, is in the vein of 2 and 3 :D

Right now I'm on co-op and working full time.
Starting September I'll be back in school I'm probably going to play FF9 then.

I might even give FF8 another go (I haven't made it through disc 2 yet :disgust:)

Edit: oops that was suppose to be an edit of my last post...oh well.

Heh...I never had a PSOne, so when I got my PS2, I bought FF9, Chrono Cross, and later, FF Anthology (however, I did play and finish FF7). I still say that for the lifespan of my PS2, the best game I may ever play on that system is FF9 :)

In fact, I put it third right behind Chrono Trigger and FF3 as the best RPG's - and games - ever.

Right now, I'm re-playing FF2 with FF Chrinicles....w00t :D

FF2 isn't in Chronicles is it?

Isn't it FF5 and FF6? The US numbered 2 was the Japanese 4.
That's not in Chronicles I didn't think...

What do you think of Chrono Cross? I started to play it at Katie's house but didn't get very far into it. She seemed to like it quite a bit though.

FF Anthology has FF5 and FF6 (our FF3).

FF Chronicles has FF4 (our 2) and Chrono Trigger.

I played through FF3 again w/ Anthology....it was awesome :D . I also LOVED the FMV's they added. It's so cool too see them in that way after playing with their miniture versions ;)

My opinion on Chrono Cross? Bleh :(

I was pretty disappointed. The story was so convoluted and had SO many characters...I mean, how on earth are you supposed to care about your characters when there are so many of them, and they are constantly switching. It's a solid RPG, but not even close to the Holy Grail(s) :)

That's what made FFIX so great...I LOVED the cast....they were just as colorful and varied as with FF2 and FF3 =)

WHOA!
Hold up FF Anthologies, and FF Chronicles are different!

WOW!!!!

How long has FF2/Chrono Trigger been out?
Those 2 - along with FF3 which I have in the form of Anthologies - are my 3 favourite RPGs ever!

Can I buy Chronicles now?

Damn you got me all excited now.
LOL I think I'm going to be running around the malls downtown tommorow looking for this.

Great minds think alike my friend :)

Enjoy Chronicles :)

There's just something funny about playing FF2 on my PS2, on a WEGA, with a 500 watt sound system. Back when it came out, I prolly had a 13 inch TV and my trust SNES :D

Nod.. CC was.. Eh. I just stuck with the 3 original characters wherever I could. I had no intention of trying to equip all 30 or so characters, no less learning their nuances.

FFX was great in keeping the number of characters reasonable (and as a result, usable.. I managed to equip all of them fairly well). The only problem I had was doing the Esper.. Er.. Materia.. Er.. Whatever shuffle :)

-edited to bring back on topic- Haven't watched the video yet, but I'll be buying a PS2 for FFX, just like I bought a PS for FF7 :)

Even though fundamentally the FF battle systems are the same, each FF has its own variations in the battle systems:
FF? : each character can change 'jobs' which gives them abilities
FF7 : equip weapons and materia that gives them magic, abilities, etc.
FF8 : skills come from guardian force juctions, and drawn magics
FF9 : skills are learnt from equipment

btw, I liked FF7 more than FF8 and FF9.

Was FF7 the first Final Fantasy you ever played?

That would be 5. It's not *that* much different from 4. Each character had a job in 4, you just couldn't change a characters job.

6 had espers, 7 had materia, and 8 had guardian forces...they all function basically alike. They altered it a little...but not really that much.

Can't comment on 9 though.

pg19: FF7 was a pretty good game....just that it wasn't really very final fantasy like....it's setting was to whacky. It was only FF in name.

Send that 12-pack to............ ;)

Yup, I think FF7 is a great game (I've played through and beaten it twice), but it just didn't have the "magic" of the others. I never did get too far in FF5 on Anthology...did you? I spent about 4 hours on it...but got sidetracked by another game or two. I might go back later...but GT3 is 0wning me ;)

I beat FF5 once.

It wasn't terribly exciting. There were a few cool special jobs. But for the most part most skills were just borrowed from FF4 characters specials. Instead of having special moves/character you have them per job.

I didn't like it as much because the characters were kind of just featureless blobs. You could make them whatever you wanted, and there wasn't really that much in the way of character development.
If you liked Kain, Edge, Rydia and Cecil make yourself a Dragoon, a Ninja with secondary Samurai, a Summoner with secondary Black, and a Knight with secondary White. Presto, Kain, Edge Ryida and Cecil, but with no particular character background to really make you care who is who..

To make it worse the stands are all so even, no character is even particular good at anything (stats change with job though).

One character has like maybe 2 points more strenght, one has 2 points more magic, one has 2 points more stamina and one has 2 points more speed.
When you attributes are between 40 and 50 base and I think you get about a 20-30 point boost to a job's primary attribute an extra 2 points is pretty minimal.

I basically just chose jobs based on what each person's icon looked best as (each job looked similar but different for each character).

Sure you might get used to using Jump attacks or Kick then lose the appropriate character, but at least the characters had some feeling to them in FF4.

In FF6 you got that back, anyone could use magic so that didn't count as a "speical" ability, but everyone had some special trait, and there was more character development.

5 wasn't bad, but no where near as good as 4 or 6.

Am I like the only person here who liked FF8. I've played FF6-9, the only one I didn't like was 6, I quit after about 20 hours because it was just too boring. Chrono Cross was ok, it was a bit of a pain having 40+ characters though, I usually kept at least 2 of the same people in my party. FF7 was in my opinion by far the best of the Final Fantasy's. FF9 was pretty cool, I thought it seemed kinda anti-climactic at the end. FF8 had the most interesting magic system, which although was kinda a pain in the ass, once I figured it out I loved it. Of course I absolutely loved fighting the Weapons, Sephiroth, and using Knights of the Round, plus the storyline of 7 rocked beyond all comparison.

Ok actually ChronoTrigger had the best storyline of anything. I absolutely love chronicles, I finally get to see FMV cut scenes of Crono, Marle, Robo, Frog, Ayla, Lucca, and Magus. I was freaking out when I saw the first one. I still need to play FF4 and 5 since I got Anthology and Chronicles. I'll get around to it eventually.
