Great idea. Everyone thinks we should feed the poor. What you idiots dont realize is that it doesnt help to fix the problem.

The cycle looks like this

Farm/Work -> Make Babies -> Feed Family -> Next Generation of Babies -> Oops too many people for our resources! -> Foreign Govt Aid -> MORE BABIES YAAAY!! -> More Foreign Govt Aid -> Still no more resources or work.. guess what MORE BABIES!!!!

We will have to stop feeding their children at some time. I feel as if we can stop now and let some people starve OR we can stop later and let MORE people starve. YAY!

They should go where the food is...

And stop having so many friggin' children.

My wife and I were watching a special on TV about Africa, and they would show all these kids - from babies to 6 years old - just completely starving. My wife makes the comment "I don't understand, if their children are dying like that, how could they even be thinking about sex?"

Because of their culture / religion. You can't tell people to change that. It's much easier to give handouts.

/sarcasm

Edit: the same stuff applies to inner cities in the good ol' US of A.

Wow, that is pretty bold of you to demonstrate a complete lack of sarcasm detection skills and then sign your post...

If you are sitting in a wasteland with no food, it might not be a good idea to breed. Likewise, it might be a good idea to go looking for some food....

The big problem with giving aid to people facing starvation due to famine is that the famine is often intentional. Ruling warlords steal all the food and destroy the farms and then control the people by controlling the food supply. Since they only control the stores of food and have destroyed production, they soon run out and ask the goold old USA for help. A bunch of well meaning people then send over tons of food and medicine which the warlords promptly take control of.

You now have a horrible cycle of hell on earth for the people trapped in this situation that aid will ironically prolong.

Either we go into all out nation building, or we leave them alone to implode. Either paths are the only ways to a real solution.

There is only so much aid you can give. $250,000,000 for a bridge in Alaska seems like a lot until you think about why. Depending on where the bridge is located you may have to fly all the construction material into the area. And I'm sure there aren't enough places to produce concrete or steel in alaska to support the project so everything has to be shipped in. You could only work during some parts of the year and you would have to design the thing to withstand extremes in temperature. Also there is the roads leading up to the bridge that may have been included in the bill. They must foresee some growth or tourism in the area otherwise they would have left them to boat, fly or dog sled to whereever they were going.

This has gotten incredibly off topic. Once again people have found some way to bash the entire continent of Africa. How dare they have children when they are starving, blah blah blah, they should all just die.

Its the children who are starving and end up suffering the worst and they didn't ask to be born into poverty. Of course I'm sure their lives are as worthless to most people on this board as is every other life in Africa. There's clearly no reason to waste billions on efforts that will never pan out.

Its unfortunate that no one realizes that sometimes A little bit of money goes a long way. Maybe someday one of those children will thank those who saved his/her life, even if you were the one wishing them dead while your tax dollars actually did something useful. I'm glad you people can find it in your heart to buy HDTVs and nice computers while you curse every extra dollar or two you have to pay in taxes to provide this kind of nutrition.

Wtf? I've had enough of these Alaskans wasting federal money and natural resources. If they can't hack it living at the end of the world on their own, they don't deserve to be there. Same with the Floridians. If you build your house in a hurricane prone zone, rebuild it your god damn self and leave our taxes alone.

It's disgusting how heartless so many Anandtechers are. To blame Africans for their problems, African children... And loathe a few dollars that can help a lot of people and hurt no one.

A little bit of knowledge is dangerous. What, someone told you about African warlords and you project that onto the whole continent? I don't think you realize that Africa is a big place. Regardless, I doubt the starving children give a damn about the reason they are starving.

How about for once not being history-phobic and acknowledging the role of western imperialism? Come on, we all know that Europe divided Africa without regard for nations, causing much of the strife since.

Really? So at 1 year you were taking care of yourself too? Oh wait I guess you parents did. So I guess if your parents couldn't have taken care of you, you should have just died? Maybe we should just kill all of the children in orphanages in the US, how dare we feed and clothe them as well. They don't deserve medicine, those kids in Annie didn't get it and they got by.

Who's subsidizing your education? Who's paying for the infrastructure you use in order to earn your comfortable living that allows you to easily buy food, clothing, shelter, water, and medicine? Would you prefer anarchy?

Aid money sent to Africa almost never gets to the poor and starving. Instead, the various warlords and their gangs fight over it and wage random genocide in order to keep it. So the money does more harm than good. And the simple truth is, yes, it is their fault. Quite frankly, it appears that their overall culture in general is violent, immoral, and unproductive. Nothing to do with race, just a sick culture where life is cheap.

One should not deny who they are; only try to better themselves.

i didn't watch teh show...but as mugs stated above, there are a lot of things taht go into setting up a traffic light. you pay for engineering labor, installation labor, electrical wiring labor, material costs + transport, quality assurance, testing, also legal/contract costs (multiple warrants/paper work have to be filed) with the city.

assuming material costs to be $50,000, the other $50,000 only pays for 5 people working 5 weeks at $50/hour.

100K doesn't seem too unreasonable to me.

Did you read the f'in link? Do you have a source for this warlord BS or are you taking a few media examples and applying them to the situation in the entire continent. There are no warlords in most of the African countries that I'm familiar with, I believe the Congo and Rwanda are extreme examples that we see in the media far more than the less war torn countries. But those are just two countries that make up part of an entire continent. These situations which people love to use as examples of why Africans should die are bred out of ignorance. You have taken the little knowledge you have about African nations and applied it to far away areas on the continent of which you are completely uninformed. That is the hallmark of modern American society, where knowledge is spotty and its better not to care than to inform oneself.

I hope that was sarcasm.

It wasn't sarcasm

The US taxpayer is not obligated to enable Africans to breed in excess of their food supply.

1. I don't register for NY Times links, or even bother using Bugmenot for NY Times links.
2. I don't think any Africans "should die," alright asshole? <^> I think they should take care of themselves the way the rest of the world takes care of themselves.
3. The warlord sh!t is real, and is hardly limited to Africa. Arafat of the PLO was the same, as was Saddam. We send money in our infinite charity to help suffering people, dictator keeps money in Swiss bank account, people continue to suffer, dicatator blames "Great Satan." Usuall bullsh!t, open your eyes.
4. You're a mystic idiot who thinks that humans are unnatural and that they are too many of us on this world. Thus, please off yourself to serve your own cause please.

The money I earn is mine. We as taxpayers choose where our money goes. You want my money to go to African, I don't. My money is not yours to give away.
