Fairly good money for Alberta, king of town money when I go back home to Missouri in the summer (perspective wise anyway, most people would've considered my family poor growing up so things are quite different).

$150k/yr wouldn't be very easy to live off of and not be house poor if buying a house in San Diego. The homes I was looking at were like 700k-800k. I guess though if I looked inland a bit more then the prices would drop, but the area I was looking at is like 15 minutes inland.

You people need to not be single when mentioning HCOL areas. A lot of people have the mentality that job A needs to pay at least $150k because that's how much you need there. Umm... dual income! Nobody is expected to live in a HCOL area by themselves so don't talk like it should be the case.

Compared to what? From personal experience, I can say that going from $50k working two jobs to $100k working one is pretty life-changing, QoL-wise.

You creep up on it incrementally, starting at $50k out of college and getting a 5-10% raise every year or two, you won't notice it. You'll "feel" like you're still making $50k.

In the NYC metro area, it wasn't until I made $175k where I felt I could live a comfortable lifestyle.
At $100k, I was just getting by. At $80k, I was just making ends meet.

Made little over 11k last month, on track for over 120k again. I work hourly with no advanced education. Although I am getting my bachelors at the age of 42 now, graduate this July. Started when 39. It will not help me at my job except for maybe promotions if we're both equally qualified and they need something to put me over the top. It is not relevant to my field. I am a federal gov contractor through DOE on the nuclear side. Full pension that I pay nothing for and matching 401k up to 6%. Fantastic insurance, paid $0 for our baby in Dec with 3 nights and 4 days in the hospital. I have $0 college debt, GI Bill paying for it. My job will also pay for college, people getting double masters for free. I am not doing that, need a break. 4 kids and one being 10 weeks old, while working full time is rough.

Like others have said, what I make would be nothing in some areas of the country. I am well aware of that. LA, NY? One bedroom apartment and high rent. Watching Flip or Flop or other TV shows I am amazed at how a 1000 sq foot house is 500k, when I have a 3400 sq ft house for 325k. Just different markets. The income per capita in my city is $23,177, median household income is $33,494. So my over 120k a year goes a long way here. It wouldnt go nearly as far in a high cost of living area. My wife did work until the latest baby, makes more sense for her not to now. She made 55k last year, so we did even better.

Making 100k doesn't make someone a snob automatically. As I and others have said, its not much depending on where you live. I have lived on far less for most of my life, fought hard to get where I am today. I could live on far less again, not at all high maintenance.

The most surprising thing may be the number of Californians here...

Don't worry, they will someday learn the meaning of white flight in a different form... avoiding high cost areas. There have been maps showing where people are moving to and where people are leaving from. Plenty from the expensive CA areas have shown to be moving to the likes of Austin, TX for their ideal hipster life style in a much lower COL area.

Meh, I'm almost in favor of a huge awakening. I HOPE they keep those unrealistic expectations all so that it can come crashing down in their face.

People aren't stupid, if they try to recover the debt bills in full with taxes, people will leave, companies will leave, etc... And keeping a city going is way more important than some dumbasses and their unrealistic pensions of guaranteed 10% returns every year.

I've noticed many threads or posts from you concerned about what others make. Why? As long as you're happy and can make ends meet, why do you care so much?

In the US, you can't just say $100K is a lot of money as a blanket statement. It depends on where you live, as others have mentioned. Where I live, six figures is a lot of money. I'd have to make like 2-2.5x that in SF or NY to have the same quality of living. Would I like to live in the Bay Area? Yes. Am I going to sacrifice my quality of living to do so? No way. I've seen homes there that I wouldn't let my dog live in going for $750K-$1 million. My current home would cost several million out there and no way am I giving up a nice home to live in California, no matter how much I do love the state.

I've long stated that my intention is to make as much money as I can for the next 5 to 10 years, whether that's via contracts or full-time jobs. I'll have all major expenses paid off in that time period and after that, I fully intend to try to get a slacker government job, coast to retirement, and grab another pension. Salary won't be as important to me then - lack of stress, security, benefits, and ease of the job will be.

There's another benefit of having dual incomes - if your spouse has a decent job with good benefits, then you can afford to take more risks to make more money because you can always use his/her benefits and don't have to really factor them into your job search. A few years ago, I got a $50K pay bump by jumping to a contract consulting position - yes, they provided benefits but they were expensive compared to my wife's benefits from the state. If I had my way, I'd do nothing but work contracts until I hit the age where I can coast to retirement (5 to 10 years from now) - there's a ton more money to be made.
