A friend of mine is selling me his corsair hx1000 psu for 150.00 and he only had it a week still in the box. He wants a more powerful psu he saw. My question is would a 1000w psu be to much power for my system which was calculated at 750w or will I be all right ? I am building a i7 920 cpu system.

What PSU have you got now? No reason to upgrade your PSU if your current one is doing the job unless you want to future proof. Of course getting the 1000W is absolutely OK, but just think whether or not you really need it.

What the heck does your friend run anyway?

That's a nice price for an HX1000. Does he have another he wants to sell me? :)

My question is why does he need a more powerful PSU? What is he running that requires more than 1000W of power? 2x OC'd LGA 1366 CPUs + 48GB of OC'd RAM + 4x OC'd GTX 295s + 50x HDD RAID array + 10x optical drives + 30x case fans + 4x water cooling pumps??

But anyway, $150 for the HX1000 is a really good deal, I'd take it just to future proof my system. I wouldn't normally recommend buying second hand PSUs, mainly because you don't know how old it is and what it's been through. But in this case you know it to be almost brand new and it's a really good price.

Unless you're planning CF in the future, you don't even need 750W.

your not going to draw anymore power than you actually need, so it doesn't matter. you can't even buy a good 750W psu for much less than your friend is selling this one to you for.
