because enzo kept lamborghini waiting when old lambo wanted to buy a car (enzo kept everyone, including kings, waiting). so lambo got pissed, left, and made his own car

It's not so much that Enzo kept him waiting, Enzo just didnt' think he was worthy enough to own a Ferrari, hence they denied him one. Now this pissed off Lamborghini, so he made sports cars to spite Ferrari.
The guy who made the Pagani Zonda had a similar story, except I don't think spite was involved..and hewas a previous engineer at Lambo..but they didn't let him design what he wanted..so he went off and made his own supercar, that arguably is as close to the McLaren F1 as possible. It's the only car Gordon Murray respects as a McLaren competitor.

My recollection is yet a third derivative: That Sr. Lamborghini wanted to customize a Ferrari he was purchasing, and Enzo basically told him to take it, as is, or leave it.
I believe Horacio Pagani always planned on starting his own car company, and started out sweeping floors in the Lambo factory, after emigrating from Argentina with the dream of starting his own company. He became friends with the legendary GP driver Juan Manuel Fangio, who helped inspire him to break out on his own.
EDIT: Apparently all three of us were wrong about the origins of Lamborghini!
From this site:
The tractor business made him a very wealthy man, and he started a second factory to build airconditioning and central heating equipment. This enterprise made Ferruccio even richer and soon he was on of the wealthiest men in Italy, his love for fast cars became known and Ferruccio owned several exotic cars back then, a Mercedes SL300, a Jaguar and a Ferrari among other cars. But his Ferrari ran into problems with the clutch and Ferruccio went to visit Enzo Ferrari to complain about it, but Enzo refused to meet with him but that didn't stop Lamborghini. He noticed that the clutch fitted to his Ferrari wasn't any different from the ones he mounted in his tractors so he drove the Ferrari to Cento and fitted a Borg & Beck clutch of his own in the car, the problem never returned after that.
Ferruccio Lamborghini decided it was time to start a new business and the Grand Turismo cars seemed like a good idea, so he built a completely new factory at Sant'Agata and started building probably the best GT cars of that time.
