six,

I own a two-story house that didn't have any phone jacks upstairs... so last year I wanted to install some. Since I don't have an attic (two-stories with vaulted ceilings) I wanted to run my wires outside right under the overhang of the house. Home Depot has some Category 3 on clearance for like $13 for 500ft... the outdoor stuff was about $80 for that length.. so as you can bet I went cheap. I live in FL... where the sun is about as bad as it gets and the cable is holding up fine... it's under the overhang so it's in the shade. The outter jacket is fairly strong and I'm not too concerned with it dying soon.

So IMO the outdoor stuff isn't worth it unless you think you might be burying the cable, in that case you might have to worry about water.

damn....$38 shipped to me in fl.....good thing, since i don't have the money to spend on this right now!

has anyone seen a nice deal on regular ole short cat5 cables? like, 10foot pieces?
already have a crimper and tester and a bag of caps, but no cat5 cable =(

Garion,
I'm thinking about using this deal to wire my house. What is a good source for jacks? Also what would the part description look like (is it just RJ45 Jack, or does it need to say something more?)

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks,
Mike

I bought my jacks @ homedepot they were like 3-4 bucks each.

SERIOUSLY thinking about this deal.

woohoo! thanks, just the thing i was looking for!! 😀
twinhead, that's exactly what i'm doing but i live in an apt complex so it's much easier.

Solid core or stranded doesn't matter too much if you have a good crimp tool. Which I doubt is the case here.

Oh and by the way:

"Some Labels on the Tester are in Chinese"

Nice nice deal, too bad I will never use 1000 fts just for networking. Any creative ideas for other uses?😉

I use Cat5 for speaker wire. Just tin 2 pair together for the left chanel, the same for the right. Low Gauge, yes, but the twisting keeps out interference. Sounds pretty good between my denon and my paradigms!
Hey you asked...

you guys realize that if you are running it outside, you can cover the wire...

its pretty simple, buy some metal conduit (spelling?) and you are done. no bacteria is going to eat through metal that you will find in your yard, or probably anywhere else for that matter...

Dammit! I was just on their site buying a couple of Ir remotes about an hour ago......Didn't see this till now, and OOS!!!:|
