My sister complains that her K6-2 500MHz/Super 6 mobo/128MB PC100 SDRAM system is slow, and she's willing to spend a grand on a whole new system (including monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers). She only uses her current PC for web-browsing and Office applications, yet she insists on a new system that will last several years. Thus, as tempting as it may be, I can't just build a 1GHz Duron rig for her. Instead, I'm considering the following:

P4 2.4GHz Northwood 533MHz $193
MSI 845GE Max-L w/ onboard audio, video, & LAN $118 Link
512MB PC2700 DDR-RAM $150
Lite On 48x24x48 CDRW $57
Foxconn Super Case Mid Tower Case ATX3400-P4 300W Power Supply $30 Link
Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse $16
Keyboard $15
Floppy Drive $8
Samsung 19" 955DF $220 Link
Altec Lansing AVS 300W 2.1 speakers $25 Link

$832 Total

Notes
- I'm overdoing it with the processor and amount of memory, but she wants longevity
- I want stability, and the only decent AMD chipset is the NForce 2, which seems excessive and currently lacks onboard video
- Like I said, she isn't a gamer, so the 845GE chipset suits her well
- Although generic, the case seems decent
- She'd like a 19" monitor
- She wants basic speakers

What do you people think? Personally, I wish I had a grand to blow...

Nice rig. You can't go wrong with that.

Here's some sales I saw today that you might be able to use.

$199 P4 2.4GHz w/ ECS motherboard combo (On sale this week, and every other week w/ MSI motherboard)
$110 512MB PC2100 @ Fry's
$9 Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse ON SALE now @ Fry's Retail

And I suggest these over what you're getting.
$30 Get ATP 2.1 Speakers instead
$59 Sony 48x12x48 CDRW (Quieter than the LiteOn)

Everything looks great. If she wanted a DVD drive, that is easy enough to do as well.

Eveything looks great for a "sister computer".

Also, you might want to consider a different case. That case is fine for most situations, but since this is a sister......you might want to do something a little more.......how should I put this....GAY.

Here are some suggestions that she might find as Awesome (this goes for girlfriends, wives, and daughters as well).

Here's One
I got this one for MY sister.
The ipitome of ghey cases.
