$1000 laptop

I'm on a rather tight budget, only $1000, so as always i want to get the most bang for my buck on a new laptop. Anything will be better than what I'm currently running on ( very old Toshiba Satellite Pro 465CDX) so I'm not worried at all about being on the bleeding edge of technology.

Things I'm specifically looking for on the laptop are a good video system and a CD-RW. I see Nvidia and ATI both offer laptop systems in all kinds of configs. I have no idea of where to start looking for either video system or if these are even the right things to be looking for. To give you a clue about its use I'm a college student that needs a good solid computer for papers, some games, (Unreal anyone??) and possibly some light AutoCad down the road.

thanks for the help.
