No you dont
Mini-FICO's (where the score is based off of just a short history with a couple of tradelines) don't count. Nor do scores pulled off services like freecreditreports.com, which are known to inflate scores. The only reliable scores are ones pulled by a lender directly from the bureaus (or possibly myfico.com).

In 10 years as a mortgage loan officer, seeing an average of about 2-3 credit reports per day, I have never seen a score higher than 830. The lowest I have ever seen is 416 (he couldn't finance the steam off a hot lunch). Average score is about 700 even. High 700's is a "brick" (exceptional score almost guaranteed of the best approval). Scores above 800 are extremely rare. A large high volume office might see one report with an 800+ score per week, if even that. I personally have not pulled an 800+ report in more than a year.

edit: actual max score range is 300-850. I don't think it's possible to get either.

It is very rare. I had no idea how rare it was until I bought my house. My mortgage company said for my age that it was outstanding and rarely seen. My wife on the other hand...her's was quite lower 🙂

Where can you check your score w/o effecting it ?

Any of the credit bureau sites like equifax, etc. I had some things going on with my credit so I had been using Experian's creditexpert service where I paid $9.95 a month for unlimited credit reports.

I cant think of many other people that might have 850?

Sorry, but having 850 would be like owning a unicorn. Its an unreachable score. Even Bill Gates doesn't have 850. I think he's only like 843.

When the car dealership checks your credit when buying/leasing a car, does that negatively affect your credit? Does it count as an inquiry?

Anything that pulls your credit report lowers your score. Also, the more credit cards you have, the lower your score. I could easily get over 800 were it not for all the frequent flier cards I open for the bonus miles. 😉

Did you just make that up? How would you know his credit score?

"ONly a handful of people have 850."

OK let's see...Warren Buffett, Walton family (Walmart heirs), Bill Gates. That's a handful right? I doubt $1,000 will change their lives.

That's interesting. I ran my dad's transunion score a couple weeks ago and it was 872.

850 is the maximum possible score.

I think Suze Orman said maybe a dozen people have perfect (850) credit scores. Anything over 800 means you have no debt and basically don't finance anything.

And yes I am embarrased to admitting to watch Suze Orman 😀

What exactly do you have to do to get 850? Im assuming it's more than just paying off your credit cards on time.

Ok then the 850 is something other than Transunion's Fico score.
