I've seen that cable withstand a lot. We ran some arials at the University I used to work at and they worked perfectly fine for 5 years before someone cut them...had to rerun them 2 months ago before I left that job. Cat5 can be buried, just make sure you know where it is and also be sure that as soon as you start having problems with your connection(a couple of years down the road), have your shovel or pick-axe and some new cable(prolly fiber...but I would put that in conduit) by that time ready to put something new in anyway. And I would only try that if it's for home or personal use... But if conduit is an option, splurge and protect your investment. Cheers!

Just got back from my local HD and the cable was priced @ $155? Could that have been a tag mistake and it would have rang up @ $49? Might have to make a trip back if that's the case 🙂

The boxes may not be in the right places on the shelf with the prices. Just grab the box and go to check out or get an employee to check the price. Mine rang up $57 for the 5e, and I was glad to pay it. That's close to the price for the *regular* cat5.

Just read over at Tech Bargains that it is the Gray Cat5e that is $57. The cable I referenced in my earlier post was blue. Anyone confirm that only the gray rings @ $57? Thanks.

They had 2 types of Cat 5e. One was Riser rated (the one for $50) and one was Plenumrated. If memory serves me correctly, the Plenum version was in the $150 range. The plenum version is supposed to have a special coating that prevents toxic fumes during an unfortunate fire.

anyone making 100 foot cables out of this??

i need a 100 foot with rj45 ends and dotn wanna pay $29!..somebody wanna sell em for $7-8??

A special thanks should go out to Steven - whoever you are. Damn, haven't you guys learned yet, when there's an (apparent) price error DO NOT take actions that will jeopardize the deal like posting it to every message board, posting it to hot deal sites like Techbargains, or calling customer service to verify the price. Everybody and their mother will know about this now and with a sudden surge in sales, attention will be drawn to the item (ie. HD will figure it out and change the price).

I mean what the hell is it - do you guys think you get "cool points" for ratting-out hot deals everywhere you can? Damn - guess I'll go back to not posting or updating hot deals again since some can't control themselves here on the Ferengi Forum....

edit - PUfreak, there are also several Home Depots in Indianapolis - right down the road on I-65....

Calm down, this is their regular price not a pricing error. Ask them to check the computer history like I did. The gray one is indoor rated so it's not recommended to use it outdoors. The blue one costs $150 because it is outdoor rated. There are 2 different UPCs of gray, one cat5 and one cat5e. Some home depots haven't received cat5e's so try a different one.

These gray ones for $49 are $59 in the bay area (same sku 709-456 if i recall), so I wonder if anyone can get them to do a pricematch with Fry's ($49):

you're net cost after 110% is about 45 bucks.

When they check the 5e upc in their computer, it gives the store code (and price) for their *regular* cat5 cable. On the shelf, that store code is matched to the regular cat5 upc.
AFAIC, that's a pricing error.

I have to agree with DB. Why would they charge the same price for twice as much cable?
Choose
500' of cat5 for $49 (.10/ft)
or
1000' of cat5e for $49 (.05/ft)
Not to mention the fact that cat5e is higher quality.

They'll be happy to measure out what you need from one of those spools
and even happier to charge you .14/ft for it (their 'by the foot' rate).

Take advantage of it while you still can.

Sorry to say that taking advantage of a pricing error may be legal, but it's dishonest.
It sets a bad example for our children and it is a slippery slop.
The only thing we should be stealing are kisses.

In this weeks Home Depot flier, it shows the Cat 5e cable in the $50 (haven't got it right here) along with several other types of cable. It looks like they intended it to be in the $50 range.

Dishonest? Stealing? I take offense to that!
I didn't steal anything, paid $52 with tax. It was an honest business transaction. I doubt HD is losing any money over it, probably making a few bucks, even at that price.
The whole purpose of the Hot Deals forum is to help each other save money.......isn't it?
We don't know exactly why it's priced as it is. Maybe the manufacturer sold it to them at a low price and they're passing it on to us. Don't know, don't care. If you need the cable, this is a good place to get it. You can insist on paying more for it if you want. Wonder how they'd ring that up.

That same cable is Advertised in Office Depot for $57. (Probably a regional price thing) There is no price error, we are not ripping them off, we are simply taking advantage of their great prices! Relax folks!

Oh no, we've got group "looting" mentality here - Like I said, the price of Category 5 cable has dropped significantly in the past months. Cat 5E is a bargain at $60, Plenum (blue) Cat 5 is a bargain at $50 (Fry's).

Whoop-dee-doo.

Why would you want to bury your cable? Are you running a network to your outhouse so you can be on the network when you're taking a dump on the can?

If I notice that HD overcharged my credit card and I go back to get a credit, do they then credit everyone who made that same purchase who was overcharged b/c of their computer error? NFW!

I think businesses tend to overcharge *much* more than they undercharge. If the over/under charging were really just an *accident*, I think the odds would be about 50/50. So let's talk about "dishonest"...............

Hmmmm, db, I know what you mean, but it's still not right.
When Clinton DONATED his old underwear to charity and took a $3 right off fo each one when he was Governer, that too was dishonest...it does't make it right, however.
