WHO SAID IT WASN'T? Was the table before the 11 other tables and was made to wait 20 minutes for waters because the server decided to let the other 11 tables CUT in front of their turn? Did the server FORGET to put in their orders or wait too long to put in their orders on purpose to CUT?

I am not sure WHERE You get it's not the server's fault?

You're right.

It's the waiter's fault, at least in part, for ignoring the table.

However, I can't think of a single situation where bad service would not be the fault of the server or the kitchen, and the manager except if you think the manager is responsible for not training the staff or keeping around bad ones.

Way to narrow it down. You've made it very easy to tell who's to blame.

It's too bad the servers have to tip out everyone else based on percentage.

They do? Where did it say that? Not all restaurants do that.

20 minutes for water seems excessive for a seasoned waiter, but maybe this guy was new. Maybe he didn't know to ask the manager for help, or maybe he did and the manager was a lazy ass, or maybe the GM simply didn't hire / schedule / train properly and the shift manager was screwed no matter what he did. If you get given too much to do (especially when you don't have enough experience), the ability to keep the proper sequence of events in your head (greet #1, water #2, carry out entree to #5, pick up drinks at bar for #1) can break down and it's all you can do to keep moving and keep doing SOMETHING. Once the situation is FUBAR, a person can be giving 100% and still be making what would otherwise be called mistakes all over the place.

Who was responsible for seating 12 tables with this guy? Why were they letting so many people in if they weren't staffed? Who was responsible for there not being more help? Who didn't tell people they were massively busy and understaffed (for X reason) and the wait would be unusually long? If the waiter is nice and hardworking but stupid, why did they keep him waiting tables?

Somewhere, somehow, probably in many ways, management goofed.

2014 - the year posting tips on restaurant receipts became cool

2014 - The year the U.S. population came to grips that they have f-ed up so badly that the U.S. is becoming a service economy. Soon, the only "jobs" available will be service jobs: teacher, doctor/nurse/orderly, lawyer/paralegal/secretary, cook, plumber, firefighter, cop, waiter/tress, maid, stripper, hardware reviewer, Paul Blart Mall cop, investment banker/bank teller, politician. In no particular order. Ok, I admit, from bad to worse. I'm kidding about the order of some of those.

So this is all people talk about now. 99% of the threads here are service job related threads.

I recall being at a diner that was open after a hurricane. It was the only place open in town. They were short on EVERYTHING, but still tried to make it work. Place was packed. People were getting pissed because the normal prompt service was really slow that day. But the way most saw it was that this sure as hell beat cold food when you had no power. I know I left a 20 dollar tip, I know others left awesome tips as well. What else was I going to do for the hours it took to get my food, sit in my house with the electricity off?

bad tips - waiters find jobs elsewhere - turnover shows management they suck... so that's why you DON'T leave a nice tip. 12 tables to a waiter? You shouldn't even seat that many people when you are understaffed.

And waiting 20 minutes for water? I've seen people get up and walk out faster than that.

That would probably do the servers a bigger favor if people did get up and walk out.

I don't know of any restaurant that will turn away a paying customer just because half their staff called in.

Because then they go home with only about $8 for the night?

Sucks to be them. Maybe they should get a 2nd job or get a different job if they're not content with the paycheck they agreed to receive when they took the job.
