These are the ones that Compusa had for $9.99 after rebates. they are TDK 74 min/650 MB.

Price is $44.99 less a $12 instant rebate and an $18 Mail in rebate. Good from 2-19 to 2-25.

And Oh yea, you need a special coupon from their monthly coupon book, You can get one at the counter. Everyone needs more CD-R's right?

The TDK rebate wants the original UPC but will accept a copy of sales receipt.

The TDK rebate is for $20 bucks, so better to use that one making the final price $12.95

It seems that the TDK 74 min/650MB can come from two places, USA and Taiwan. The USA ones are made by TDK themselves and the Taiwan ones are made by Ritek. I don't know if the 100-packs can come from either of these like the CompUSA ones, but you might check on the package to see if they were made in USA.

Cosco also has some TDK's made in Japan if you look hard enough. I found a few spindles made in Japan, you can easily find them because they have screw tops.

ss284: Look on the packages for where they were made. If they have made in USA, they should be good. If it says Taiwan, then they are Ritek, which have a poor reputation for quality. They'll be fine for storing non-crucial data, but probably not fit for music CDs.

These are from Taiwan, which I guess means its Ritek. Argh! Oh well, $5.00 for 25cdrs isn't such a bad deal I bought 4 packs for $20.00 hehe.

Even if they are Ritek crap ... if they work for your particular setup and for your uses then what the heck? Cheap is cheap is cheap. More power to you and thank your lucky stars. Some people don't seem to come across any problems with them. Some do. If you don't ... then go for it.

What makes me cringe though is when people have good experiences with a particular product (like cheap cdr media made by crap producers) and make blanket statements that they are IN FACT good for everyone else. It just doesn't work that way.

The buy.com deal was $39.95, maybe it was less for like a day or two. With shipping it comes to $39.95 -$10 + 6.81 (shipping) -$20 = $16.76

bill_n_opus, I would sure hate to back up my data to a "Made in Taiwan" disk some consider doubtful, and a year later find that disc is unreadable. I'd rather play it safe on day one and go for the "Made in Japan" discs.

SteveO, I totally agree with you.

What I was just commenting on is that many people in the Forum don't really seem to care and that the cheaper the better - as long as it "works for me".

Since this thinking is so pervasive here - AND - some of these crap media deals are actually pretty amazing considering the price per piece - that I just echoed the sentiment that if your particular setup and your particular requirements/expectations allow you to use crap media with some success ... then more power to you. What the hey I say.

However, I know better. I've always wondered whether people seriously never see the long term deleterious effects of crappy media on important media - something that people don't seem to consider until it's too late. Well, it happened to me early on and I learned my lesson. I don't use "junk" unless I:

(a) either have some in stock and i'm just making music cdrs
(b) or i'm just burning stuff that I don't really care about

Anything that needs to be archived, backed up or plain would like to have in readable form in the next couple of years or so all get put on top notch media like Kodak, Taiyo Yuden or Mitsui Chemicals.

Besides, you can get great deals on quality media anyways so it don't bother me at all.
