Are you talking about these:
Sonic Bulk
or these?:
Sonic thermal printable

I have never used the bulks, but have used quite a bit of the thermal printables. The first ones I got were Longtens and the last ones I got were Must01. Both burned very well in my NEC 2500a. I could burn the Longtens at 8x and the Musts at 6x. I found that if I burned both at 4x, Kprobe error rates were very low, about the same as Riteks. They also burned very well, but not quite as good in my Toshiba 5112. I got the thermals to print in my Casio thermal printer, and the results look very good.

The second link are the ones that seem to work better. I bought and tried a spindle of 50 back in July. Media code was MUST001's I think. They burned great on the NEC 1300a and 2500a at 4X. Just bought another spindle of 100 for 20.70 after the 10% off code with free shipping.

I really need to know this, but do those thermal dvd-r's have the thermal print go all the way to the stacking ring? In otherwords, is the thermal print of a standard cd or full face (to put it into context)?

BTW I used the sonic dvd+r's before and got the media code AML002 which I have no idea what they are. They mostly burn good except for a few every couple spindles with dye problems that I just toss.

These dvd's get scratched very very easily. If you use these for burning movies they will skip and pixelize very easily, if for data files get curropted. I took advantage of this deal last time it was out for 22.50 and have been thinking of creative ways to get rid of them ever since. Spend the extra couple bux and get yourself some Ritek or Fujis.

i'm pretty sure there's a coupon floating around for 10% off, my friend just ordered some for $20 and change shipped

seriously, i would not get these things. bad dvd media sucks. my dvd burner got messed up and the only thing that i can attribute that to was cheap blanks.

I've used the Sonic Thermal printables before and there are a couple different kinds.

I do not like Shop4tech's rating system, they only post good comments, but other than that I haven't had issue with them.

This media, depending on the media code you get is either crap or great. I personally recommend if you order them to request Media Code MUST001. The old discs were Longten001 which suck. Most people tried those a long time ago and cry about this media sucking...Sonic is just a name they use, the media code means more than the name. People need to learn about media before they bash a name or they end up sounding dumb most of the time.

As for these discs, if you get the MUST001's I can attest that they will burn great on NEC2500a and 3500 drives. I haven't used them on other drives. cdfreaks and forums.rpc1.org will have more info. You can also get hacked firmware from Herrie or a couple others to burn these at 8x on the 2500a, not sure about other drives. As for the actual disc, they are thermal printable with a clear stacking ring, and they actually have 4x printed on the stacking ring. Yes, they are sold as 1x-2x media but they have 4x printed on them and dvd-info pro lists the media write descriptor as 2x and 4x.

So it all depends on your drive. I have burnt well over a thousand of these to the edge while doing video editing. They work great as long as the media code is MUST001. For $0.15 a disc or so in bulk, these are my favorite discs. I've used RitekG04 and G05, they used to be good, but again depending on the plant they come from now, they are 50/50 at best...but they are an example of what a name will do for you used to be good, now just alright but still overpriced.

For the price, try a few and if your burner doesn't like them you've lost a couple bucks. But if they work like they do for me and a lot of other people then you'll have a new favorite media that is dirt cheap. Oh, and for everyone asking how long they will last...they are $0.15 a piece, get over it and burn another one in a couple years. For backups...if you are really backing up from data that is years old then you have issues.

That's all, and time to order more blanks. Anyone have a coupon for this month? They always have %10 off coupons every month.

JONOBP1

I must correct you. YOU CANNOT order my media code. Its a crap shoot on what you get. There not going to sit there and be like hmmmm, lemme test these in my dvd player before we send them out to this kind customer of ours

Every time I have ordered I put in the Comment field "MUST001 media only" They come in 50 spindles or 100's depending on how many you order and who packs it. I have ordered at least 7 times and only once got the wrong media code. I got 7 spindles of MUST001 and 1 spindle of Yi Jhan which were crap. I contacted them and they said they ran out of the MUST001's and had to send those. I asked for a replacement, sent it back and about 2 weeks later got a spindle of MUST001's. So that method seems to work fine for me. I'm sure they realize that if it's requested then most likely they'll get them returned if they send something else. A friend also uses these and has always gotten MUST001 in the last few month's of orders. Most likely they don't even carry Longten001's anymore probably because of complaints.

But like I said, I ask for them in the Comment's field of my order and have been happy 99% of the time.

The Longten, the Yi Jhan, and Must are all the same, as far as I can tell. They all burn good at 4x in my Nec 2500 and my Nec 3500, and none of them will play back in any of my 4 settop DVD players. They pause, freeze, pixelate, and just flat hang-up and stop working. Kprobe scans look like total s*it.

With that said, they seem to work very well for backing up computer data. All of my computer DVD drives (recorders and readers) will read these discs with no problems. YMMV, so test these for yourself. DO NOT ASSUME THE DISCS ARE GOOD UNTIL YOU HAVE TRIED PLAYING BACK THE MOVIE ON YOUR SETTOP PLAYER!!!

Hey htne,

Not sure if you use standard Nec firmware or something modded. Try downloading Herrie's firmware for the 2500a. He changed the write method when the media code of the discs if recognized to burn them as if they were Fuji media I believe. I get 8x and have used them on a RCA, KOSS, APEX, Samsung and JVC dvd player...also work with my Lite-on and Memorex dvd drive in my computer.

I notice a huge difference with the Must001's though. Longten's pixelated at the outside edge after about 4GB, they are total trash. Yi Jhan would not even read in my drive until I updated the firmware to other than NEC. Even then they had many CRC errors.

If you use NEC firmware and flash to the modded ones, you might want to give the Must's a run again.

I know exactly what jonobp1 is saying. I need to get a huge batch of dvd-r's soon and requesting the media code you like might just help out more than people think. Also, thanks for mentioning that the stacking ring was clear (I really needed to know that). I also own a couple NEC 2500a's but flashed with the Mad Dog 2F.7 firmware. I gotta give these a try with it and finally put the Herrie/MD debate to rest.

BTW, where do you see these $0.15 in bulk? last time I checked it was $0.17 at the cheapest. Also kinda funky, but there are 2 of the exact same media, but different prices here and here.

Oh Jeez.....
I just bought 100 at the 23.00 price two days ago with 10% off coupon. $20.70 plus tax

The other link would have been 17.10 plux tax.

Could have save another 4.00. Oh well.

I wonder if the two are different media codes????

Hey Silex,

The $0.15 was for 500 packs with a coupon code I had before. If you can find this months 10% coupon you can get pretty close to that if you order in 200 or 500 packs. They also send you 5 free dvd-rw's for each $50 you order...they are 1x and suck, but it's something to go along with the free shipping.

As for the Herrie/MD debate, only heard a little of it. Personally when this media code came out Mad Dog didn't have many drives available and the 2500a was new. Herrie tweaked the firmware and sent me a test to try out with the new media. It's worked like wonders since then and I've not found a reason to touch it. Burns these cheap-o's like they were taiyo yudens and even gives me nice dual layer burns. Love the 2500 and these MUST's are quality in my book. So if you need a nice bulk and the thermal area is alright with the clear ring, give them a shot...request the media code and you'll most likely get it.

Oh and as for the multiple links. This sounds weird but I seriously think the cheaper of the two is the one that they advertise with...check out Pricewatch and that'll be the link you end up with. The more expensive one will come up on their homepage from time to time and also when you search their site. So basically they are the exact same, just one is the discount price. At one time they had 3 links, but 2 were the more expensive price, the third was linked on Pricewatch.

Anyone have a coupon code for Shop4Tech.com for this month?

Hecka yeah there are coupon codes! Can't say it here, but just do a google search for 'shop4tech coupon' and you'll get a plethora of them 🙂. Most of them expire 11-30-04. Thanks btw for the explanation! Threw a PM your way jon!

Are the tops of thermal disc smooth ? for example i had gotten some printable disc & didn't like the full to them as they felt as if the just had a label on them. what i really wanna know is are the tops to these thermals similar to the tops to princos ? princos arent thermal but has some smooth tops. reason why i ask this is because i just ordered me one of those casio thermal printers but wanna print onto smooth disc not no rough ones like inkjet printables.

Thanksgiving is coming and you'll get a nice 10% discount

Use THIS LINK and get 100 Pack DVDs for $17.10 including S&H after "savings"

These discs work great w/NECs burners flashed w/Herrie's Firmware
