100-pack of *32X* TDK CDR's that are most likely Taiyo Yudens for $24 after MIR at Costco

Okay, for those looking for very high-quality CDR's: Costco is selling 100 pack spindles of 32x TDK CDR's that appear to be the Taiyo Yuden version for $36, with a $12 mail-in rebate.

Now, to address some questions:

Are these really Taiyo Yuden discs?
TDK's 32x CDRs are made by both Ritek and Taiyo Yuden, the latter being significantly better quality than the former. I purchased a 50-pack spindle of 32x CDRs two weeks ago and they were definitely Taiyo Yuden. (Mine came from Tiger Direct.) Others here purchased 50 packs when CompUSA had their sale last week, and they were Riteks.

This pack at Costco clearly states "Made in Japan" above the UPC, and it has the screw-on spindle lock on the top -- the two trademarks of the Taiyo Yuden discs. However, I didn't buy these and I haven't run CDR Identifier on them. But Costco has a very friendly return policy, so if by slim chance they aren't TY's, you can get your money back. I'd say these are most certainly TY's, however; all of TDK's other "made in japan" discs (instead of taiwan) have been TY's.

Is this a good price?
Yes and no. TY discs are becoming increasingly hard to find, mainly because the companies that used to rely on them exclusively (like TDK for awhile) now keep using different manufacturers. TigerDirect.com still has their 50-packs of these discs available here for $19.99, with a $10 MIR rebate, bringing the price down to $9.99 (or $20 for 100, instead of $24 like Costco). However, shipping for me on ONE 50 pack was almost $9, so with shipping you're looking at more expensive discs. Then again, you're going to pay tax at Costco, and not at TigerDirect. By the way, I'm certain that the 50-pack from TigerDirect is Taiyo Yuden -- that's where I bought mine. One caution about TigerDirect: While they sent me the correct 32x discs, my invoice -- both online and the packing slip -- say "50 Pack TDK 24x CDR". That could be a problem with the rebate. I only sent my rebate request off last week, so I won't know for some time if it gets rejected. TigerDirect can be a real pain in the butt.

Couple of things to note:

The costco TDKs are Riteks, I bought them.

Costco has the 100 pack on sale this week, last day sunday for 15 bucks, there is an instant discount if you have the passport coupon.

Pothead: You ran CDRIdentifier on them? Can you cut and past the results for us here so we can see the stats?

I've never seen any Ritek discs made in Japan. Do yours say Made in Japan or Taiwan? Are you sure you bought the 100-pack?

The only passport rebate I saw was for the 50-pack of 24x CDR discs. What are the terms of the $15 deal? What do you pay up front, what are the different rebates, etc?

Pothead, did the TDK's you bought meet the two criteria that MontyBurns set out, namely:

(1) "Made in Japan" on the exterior label, and

(2) the "signature" screw-on knob that holds the case together?

Point is, some might be Riteks and others might be TYs.

The TDK 100 packs at the Costco in Honolulu are all made in Taiwan (as of last week).

The overwhelming majority of TDKs are Ritek (Made in Taiwan).

TDKs manufacturers:
Taiwan - Ritek
Japan - Taiyo Yuden
USA - TDK

If you want TYs for a decent price, Fujifilms are always TYs and are $19.99 for a 50pk at Target.

So looks like it depends on the store. Be sure to check that they are "Made in Japan" before you purchase.

At the very least, you save a few bucks over target (after rebate, however) by going with TigerDirect. I provided the link in the first post.

Ok guys sorry, I had to make a call on fixing a computer for the past 2 hrs...

Mines came in a 2-50pack spindle. They did not have the spin on top.

The deal ends this Sunday: 36-12 rebate = 24- $7 instant = final of 14ish-15ish, you may be able to ask the cashier for a coupon though.

I will do a copy and paste of the cd-r when I get home, prolly in the next 4-5 hrs or so.

The pack I saw tonight is one 100-pack, now two 50 packs. Seems like they're doing this packaged a couple different ways.

I would look for the 50pk TDK spindles at FRY's. They are $19.99 before a $10 MIR. You can use up to three MIR's per address or individual. I ran CDR Identifier and it shows that they are the Taiyo Yuden's. I agree that they come both ways but the screw tops made in Japan are just that, made in Japan. The Riteks are definately made in Taiwan. I prefer the TDK's over the Fuji's. They have a better protective coating and seem to play in more players. Good luck.
