Lighten up. The world is full of different people who have different opinions, that's what makes it interesting. I hardly think the Hot Deals section of an internet forum is the place to air those opinions, though.

Better get used to it. There are now 34 states encompassing over 70% of the US population, with legislation on the books not merely allowing but requiring the state to give citizens a license to carry firearms in public, so long as they they pass the requisite background check and training course.
In Vermont, no license is needed to carry a handgun in public, it is protected by the state constitution. Vermont also happens to have one of the lowest per capita crime rates in the country.
California is not among these states, but you say that criminals here already have easy access to firearms and are shooting up the highways? Thanks for making the progun argument for us.

If you shoot to defend yourself or family against an attacker about to kill you, I understand that in most places you are responsible for making sure no stray projectiles you shoot leave your residence to harm others. This is done by using the right kind if ammo and with a low enough energy to keep it in the walls.
Before you condemn someone who wants to be allowed the protection of a gun, think about the alternatives. You can run and try to escape out a window with a cell phone (that's my first step) but if that's not possible or you need to help someone being attacked, you have only non-lethal weapons like pepper spray and tasers to defend yourself with. There is a reason no police force has given up firearms as a last resort after non lethals; as no non-lethal alternative has been found to be as effective as firearms at stopping attackers. They will probably still be able to shoot you after you have "stopped them". Non-lethals are also too easily defeated with thick clothes and goggles or face mask. Of course you also can try using scary harsh language but as Hudson in Aliens says, "What're we supposed to use, man? Harsh language?"
It's also naive to expect the police to always be where you are instantly to defend you; that is if you can even get to a phone in time. If you want to prevent yourself and family from becoming victims, it is practical to have a firearm available. Most home invaders don't want a gunfight and will leave after seeing or hearing you say that you are armed with a firearm. Essentially you can learn what the police would do if there and do the same yourself in their place until they arrive. If someone invades your home, I think the best action would be:
1) Grab home defense gun, cell phone and try to exit through close window; then call police.
2) If unable to escape also first call police and hide and wait. If you are approached by intruders, show and tell them you are armed and if they advance, discharge one round or blank in a safe backstop. They will likely flee but if they continue to attack with a gun or weapon, as a last resort shoot to protect yourself. It is always the first priority to have everyone walk away unharmed, including the attacker; just as the police try to do.
The alternative is:
1) Same as above.
2) If approached you use your harsh language and nonlethals and while doing so you are shot to death or overwhelmed (by many possibly) and stabbed or blugeoned to death.
Most would agree in the second scenario you are a helpless victim and in the first protocol you have a good chance of saving the lives of both you and the invaders.
If you really believe your negotiating skills will work, feel free to try it unarmed. My choice is to feel safer and far more effective by negotiating with a gun as last resort.

While this is true, it couldn't hurt to have adequate training also. Instead of teaching our children that guns are "bad", we should be educating them on their proper handling and use. We allow 16 year old kids to get behind the wheel of 4000lb SUV's but it's taboo to teach them about firearms. Just silly.

There haven't been many cases of Innocent bystanders getting shot by defensive gunshot for several reasons. The most obvious being that due to the dificulty in most states of obtaining the permits, not too many law-abiding citizens carry concealed weapons. You people seem outraged by the idea that criminals can sue for being injured during their crimes, but of course you forget that they must prove that the person who harmed them was acting outside of what could be deemed reasonable self-defense. Watch any of the "Caught on tape" shows and see a storekeeper who was robbed of fifty dollars shoot a fifteen year old who's running away in the back and then try and defend your position that these bad criminals are filing frivilous lawsuits. The courts are there to make these determinations, NOT the legislatures. For every person who this saves the trouble of a lawsuit for acting in true self-defense, this will be used by a dozen others to excuse their bloodlust when they were already well out of harm's way. And innocent people will also pay the price of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This law makes "law-abiding" citizens more dangerous than ninety percent of the criminals you're trying to protect them from.

Apparently you skipped to the end of the thread without reading. Your argument is flawed factually.

In Florida alone, over 800,000 permits have been issued since their concealed weapons law was passed, but only around 200,000 licensees maintain a valid license in any given year.

The reason there are not many cases of innocent bystanders getting shot by citizens defending themselves is because citizens rarely are called upon to make the judgements that police are required to. In defense of the police, they often find themselves in circumstances where it is not readily apparent who the bad and good guys are. A citizen who becomes a victim usually has no trouble reliably telling who the bad guy is, its the one trying to kill or rob him.
