for me, cable is the best option.... if i just want speed.. except.. 2-way not untill next year supposedly That will run me $35/mo + cable modem + installation (or wait for free promo's). This is for Comcast@Home. If comcast didn't buy out our current cable provider.. i'd have no shot at it.

SDSL i have just learned is supposedly $40/mo for 160/160... northsomething backbone... but i dunno anything about the isp. Blah, it's all still expensive

@Home customer here in South Jersey and can't complain about speed. Their mail server is whacked, but I don't get that much personal email to make me bitter. Cable is definitely cheaper (WAY cheaper for the same speeds) here than DSL. Also DSL isn't available in large parts of this area. Plus from my observations, you don't come close to the advertised DSL speeds unless you live next door to the phone company equipment (which really hurts property value). I forgot to mention that DSL in this area is cappped on uploads much lower than my upload-unfriendly @home account. Given those observations and my own experiences I'd say DSL is NOT a better deal here.

CyBrShRk, I agree with you that e-mail system is whacked...I have only had Comcast@home service for a week now and I am extremly pleased with the speed so far, it sounds like the e-mail problem isn't specific to me.

I know several people who have the email trouble as well. They complained to Charter and got them to pay for there old dialup connection ($9.95/month) so they could continue to use that email. I used to work for the $9.95/month company and my 2 accounts there are free for life so I have just always used that email address and haven't noticed any problems with @home since I haven't used it.

Why do you keep thinking that cable users have to agree to a contract? There is ABSOLUTELY no contract involved. Why would they be stuck with 2 years of hell?

We never said the DSL = crap. We are just saying that cable is not crap for many users.

DSL is fine but it is NOT better than cable in all cases. I know what my experience has been and I've been more than happy with it for more than a year.

So what if it's better in the future? I'll switch over then but until I see results from my area that DSL is better than cable, I'll stick with cable. I know that cable is better where I am.

I'm not using cable because I think it will be faster later on but it is the faster right now and that's what matters. Why would I pay for something slower now just because in the future it may be faster?

I also have Comcast@Home in NJ....had for around 6 months.

What is the deal with their Email server ?
Everytime I called up to complain they acted like I was the only one who had a problem.....in the end I gave up and use a web-based email.

Wow... looking at the American rates for cable makes me happy I'm Canadian... $39.95/month for 8Mb/s down and 2Mb/s up capped at 120kb/s. I've had sustained downloads of 800kB/s half an hour... oh well. We get good cable speeds but crappy deals on everything else.

Yes, @home is having problems with their mail and proxy servers... they go down like a cheap <insert noun here>.

I realize that cable is better than some areas, however, its going to eventually get worse. And there is a contract, and a termination fee for cable users, at elast most of the cable companies near here, @home &amp; cablevision. Yet, DSL has much room for improvement, and as it improves, price will fall. In the past 2 years cable price has dropped 10 dollars, while DSL has dropped at least twice that. DSL is for the future, not to mention the reliability and not having it go out on you intermittently.

Think about it, a year ago 640-128 dsl was 50 dollars a month, now its 1500-384 for 40. at this rate of change, we will have 6000-1500 consistent connections for about 20 dollars. cable might be reduced to 24.99 to compete with it, but it will never get faster, just more and more congested. As DSL builds up, more stations will be made, for better coverage as well.

and also, Pings tend to be better with dsl than cable.
I pay CS, and of the 4000 servers i play on, half make the <100 ping filter, while my friends and workers with cable only get about 1000.

I currently have Mindspring DSL with around 1.2mbps/340bps constantly for $50 which i'll call to lower it to $40.

I also called and had AT&amp;T@home installed (two months free) for free...no installation fee or setup fee. It's getting upto 5mbps/125bps. downloads great, but upload really sucks...

Also, DSL had never been down but @home's been down twice already in two weeks..

i think i'll stay with DSL ... yes, i'll miss those download speeds but it'll come down eventually anyway...

ss...at&amp;t @home in the Bay Area CA has NO contract, whereas ALL dsl options here do...also install and equipment is &quot;free&quot; (part of the $39/mo includes $10 modem lease fee)


This debate is just like cell phone debates...it TOTALLY depends on your area (and even mico-area) where you happen to live...for some cable is better, for others its DSL....

I'm not too familiar with cable. I currently got Verizon DSL = Sucks. I'm very tempted to go to fast.net for $69 month 1.5 down and 320 up. I believe Comcast@home is available at my area. The only thing that probably will suck bad is that I'm only aboout 6 blocks from the Center City Downtown area.


But question:
Cable, does it requires you to upgrade your current cable box? Can it co-exist with current cable equipment? I hope so cuz I don't wanna buy 4 more digital boxes, if that's what they require. And, I guess, you can just hook up the cable modem to a router or switch.

Second question is, cable most likely has dynamic IP right, not static? This is important, as I'd like to keep only one IP as I transfer alot files from work.

I don't know about where you are, but I'm a Comcast cable customer with basic cable and no boxes, and they didn't have to add anything other than the splitter on my coax coming into the house, and that went directly into the cable modem (RCA usb), all with a static IP.

I don't know about everyone else, but where I live (north eastern NJ, across the river from NYC) there is like a 3 month waiting period for dsl. That means I would get a 1 year contract, that would start 3 months after I moved in. Since my lease is only 1 year, it could still have to pay for it after I move out. Comcast got my cable modem up and running in 3 days. Service is good, speed is good, I am not complaining.

ss, Yes you are right that the speed will decrease as more users begin to use cable, but you know what? I don't plan on keeping this for more than a year anyway. If the speed becomes unbearable in a year, I will just switch over to another method of access, One that is both affordable and quickly installed. Right now, Cable is the only one that means those requirements.

The thing that everyone, and especially ss284, needs to consider is that both cable AND dsl vary greatly depending on what location you are in. Where I live, it costs $50 a month for 640k(bit)/256k(bit).. Cable here is only $40 for the isp, connection, and modem lease and many people here get 2+Mb constantly. I, unfortunately, am stuck with DSL for now since cable has reached my side of town yet. Another thing ss mentions is that with DSL you don't have to worry about occasional connection problems/drops. While this may be true with DSL in some areas, I personally have experienced times where my DSL would not connect for over a day or two. My point is that (right now) you can't say one technology is better than the other, both have their ups and downs depending greatly upon where you live.

EDIT One thing I forgot to mention is that here there are no time contracts for either service.. dsl used to be 256/256 with a year contract, but removed the contract and gave you the modem to be able to keep up with the cable (@home) /EDIT
