Comcast@Home says call 1-800-782-0398 and mention Offer code Q400B (works for all), and they will send you a $100. Gift Check in 6-8 weeks after sending in a copy of your bill to the specified address. They state the Gift Check is good for online shopping, but couldn't specify if it was limited to certain retailers, but hey, $ is $, and I checked their site and there are no details as to which retailers it is with either. You sign up, get a month free, free installation or free self-install kit (with the modem), free one month of service with no commitment. Offer applies to standard installation for new residential customers in Comcast Cable wired and serviceable areas only.
Here is the Gift Check Info.

What cable ISP is only $20 a month? I am paying $40 for Verizon DSL which is great, but definately would switch for half the price. Does include modem rental which is free with DSL?

I signed up with @home over a year ago. I was supposed to get 2 months at 1/2 price or $20. Well, it's been over a year and I'm still only getting billed $20 a month. :) It would still be worth it at the $40. The price includes modem. It's $30 if you have your own modem.

I think ss284 was not thinking straight when he said that cable is crap. I don't think he even tried cable internet access. Most of the time, DSL providers run into tons of problems. First they have to determine how far your house is from their distribution point. Then, they have to find a local phone service to activate line-sharing, and you get charged extra. And then you have to sign a contract. Also, the further you are from the DSL distribution point, the slower speed you get! I ordered my DSL 4 months ago, and I have yet to receive anything from them. In the meantime, AT&T cable became available in my area. I called them up, and voila!, a week later I was blazing thru the Internet at 1.5Mbps!

Cable rules! Another option is to try MMDS..but that is still pretty young technology and expensive.

well then the 20 dollar discount doesnt count! the normal price is 30 dollars a month, along with a 99 dollar modem fee, and other setup costs i dont know about.

right now I have mindspring dsl, and I got the first 6 months free, plus 39.99 a month afterward. the setup and modem are free, and I ping better to the same server than all my friends with cable, and thats when cable is even up.

cable speeds are only quick when using a fast server, the only one that comes to mind is microsoft's conxion download site. I get a steady 160kpbs down, and a 40kpbs up.

If you hadnt noticed, almost all businesses/home workers go for for dsl if they have the choice.
just look at the user base for cable.

auyong,
Yes I have tried cable, most all my friends have it. The 10 dollar lower price was enough to bribe them over, even without knowing that the modem and installation required a fee. Of course when my firend first had the service, the speeds were great, topping out at 2.5 mbps. Its greadually declined though, and now he gets no more than 800kpbs. this is after 6 months, and he still has 18 left till the contract is over. Most dsl contracts are about 1 year long, mine was only 6 months, with only a 50 dollar charge on the cancellation fee. And line sharing is not a problem, no fee whatsoever. If its a problem they will just install another line, for free of course.

bottom line,

cable might be ok at the start, but it will gradually get worse.
dsl will either remain the same or get better.

wit the shorter contract you can change ISP's when there is a price drop, so all is ok.

I have a steady 1.8-2.3Mbps down and ~250 up. Not to concerned about the up though because I rarely up stuff. I know in most parts of the country the numbers aren't like mine but that's what I get and DSL would never be worth it. In over a year the service has never been down. Plus DSL for me would be $50 :( Nothing wrong with DSL but cable is NOT crap.

What contract? There is no contract involved with @home. I have had the service over a year and no deterioration in service yet.

We should also note that NO installation fee and NO long term contract for AT&T Home right now..

What I don't like w/ DSL is those at least one year contracts..

For the user who said

<< cable = crap >>

, when you can show me a xDSL company/technology that will give me 4.5 MB/sec for $30 a month, post it here and then I might agree with you. But until then, I am very happy paying $30 a month and getting 4.5MB/s on my cable modem (note this is BOTH download AND upload speed of 4.5MB (MB=megabit for those that might be confuesd)).

For any who are wondering, I have Comcast@home cable modem, but my area no longer uses standard coaxial cable, we have fiber from the street box to the main distribution centers, so that makes a difference.

From my experience comcast@home sucks crap in sacramento, ca. with way more ups and downs than my old dsl in stockon, ca. with cable my speeds vary and so do my pings like crazy. I was told on the phone the nature of the technology the cable networks are using says this will happen so who are minions to argue with that? Are you saying it isn't true? Network quality at the source is always an issue no matter what service you use but the cable technology is in fact more flawed in my opinion.

I have had @home for just 3 months in my area and its been really crappy every day at times when ping skyrockets to 500, 700, 1000+. I can't get dsl here so Im stuck but through my experience I would drop cable in a second. You get nasty pauses, and timeouts and bad pings allot, making online gaming most of the day unplayable which sucks for me. I contact them and they tell me its gonna slowdown and thats just how it works.

For those that have blazing cable your in the minority based on personal experience, friends and many articles in popular computer magazines I have read about the technologies. Great for you, maybe it will continue to be great for you or maybe it won't.

With that being said I won't cancel cable and work around these stupid issues I have to put up with, cause I can't stand dialup.

Cable does = Crap. Seattle area, at&t@home service, Five days to connect, did not connect, talked to eight people troubleshooted twice, would send truck to fix it. and they disconnected my neighbors cable and some other guys cable modem down the block when they came three weeks later to collect the unused equipment!

Calm down. A mistake a lot of people commit is to draw a line in the sand and says, this is better than that. Proof? "I have tried both and 'that one' is crap." That's not anywhere near convincing.

I've used DSL here, and has now switched cable, because I get >1000kbps consistently! Yep, and I check with more than 1 online tool. But I don't claim either to be intrinsically better. It varies greatly from location to location. In fact when I was using dial-up, my friend 2 or 3 miles away had very different experiences from mine. Now broadband isn't dial-up, but even within a neighborhood DSL or cable experiences will be different. If you know a little about how each works, you'll understand why. So next time you want to say cable is crap, you can do that. Just don't generalize for others.

And that goes for cable users, too.

It's diffrent in all area you don't just bash it till you know how your area is. Only prob here is thier mail server is so wacked its not really worth using thier mail.

This is South NJ area btw.

I did this deal last Saturday thru Radio Shack, I am a Comcast customer in the Philadelphia area...Radio Shack has the RCA DCM226 Cable Modem for $98.98 after instant rebates, plus they give you a $100 Radio Shack gift card. (you can't use the gift card to pay for the modem...I tried ) you also get 1 month of free service...since I now own the modem, service is $32.95 with no annual contract.

oh btw...this is a self install with the Quickstart Kit, it took me about 10 minutes to hook up then I called the Comcast 800#, they had the service activated in a few hours. So far it's been great, much faster than the old 56k modem...LOL

Dunno about you all, but my road runner is FAST. We're in the OK city cable region and I get 100-300kps (actual download speed)downloads all the time. I've heard nothing but bad things about DSL. The cable has never given me a problem and my brother which has DSL is running about 50k now. Not bad, but definately not as fast as my cable.

Bottom line then, is that $100 is a Radio Hovel GC and no other. Better than to say Ashford I guess.
Comcast is available in my community, odd thing is, they haven't given Comcast permission to provide Net access! Odd as all get-up.

Also, the consensus is that it's either/or: Free modem with self-install. OR, buy for $100 [after discount/rebates] and they install free. ???
