I'm a ml employee so I kinda had to sign up for one of these account and it really turned out to be a fantastic deal. Even if you aren't going to be doing much trading, you can open an ml direct cma account and get anywhere from 2-5 percent interest in the money market account just for having your money sit there. It is just as liquid as a checking account.. in fact I created one account to use as checking b/c merrill does not charge for checking or checks etc.. completely free. ATMs would be the only issue.. they do charge $1 for every atm transaction, but you still make out by far from the interest and cost of checks at other banks (usually around 17-25 bucks per book). Plus it is a great online broker for those of you who do want to trade.. you get excellent transactions for 29.95/trade

TD Waterhouse has a similar offer -

For a limited time, receive $100 back when you open a Brokerage Account online with TD Waterhouse. This credit will be deposited directly into your new TD Waterhouse Brokerage Account.

To qualify for this offer, you must open your new TD Waterhouse account online via this page and be approved in order to receive your $100 credit. All accounts must remain open for a minimum of 6 consecutive months.

Does the TD Waterhouse have an inactivity charge? Datek started doing this, if you trade less than 8 per 6 months. Does anyone know how good the streaming interface is for TD Waterhouse? And how it compares to Datek?

thanks.

I don't see any link for e-trade on Buy.com website so i would assume that offer is dead. I got on that 3-4 months ago. They e-mailed me the certificate number right away. But i couldn't use it till the 2 month requirement had passed. I still have it and never actually tried to use it.

What I wanna know is can i transfer the e-trade account to say Merril Lynch or Datek ? If the account is big enought do i still need to put in 1k to get $100 ?

I think most of these brokers have started charging a NO activity fee
for just keeping the money.
There semms to be a catch for me.......
and per trade teh cost is huge. There are brokers who charge less.

I do not trade but do a lot of research on trading

I don't think they pay you to put money in (any more) but Ameritrade is great. Easy, fast, and 8 bucks a trade flat rate... unlimited real-time quotes... etc. etc.

FYI,
You won't get as good clearances with an Ameritrade, e-trade, etc. The majority of your time they will send your trandes to be executed on a secondary exchange (Pacific, Boston, etc) rather than on the NYSE. If you're dealing with even medium size trades (1/2 lot), your cost basis will be lower with a quality brokerage house because they'll save you an 1/8 or 1/16 here an there. Now with decimalization good transactions are even more important.

Cool thanks for the info. Unfortunately, for the time being -- I'm too poor to make big trades... so the 8 bucks helps. Exactly what is a Lot/ half-lot etc? Thanks... One day... one day...

ETRADE no longer has the $100 Buy.com or Egghead.com promo. They currently have a $75 account sign up bonus or 5000 frequent flyer miles (10,000 miles for $10k, 25,000 miles for $50k initial deposits) for opening an acount with $1000 and keeping the account open for 6 months. Mileage programs include United, TWA, Delta, and Northwest. What's really stupid is that ETRADE lets you open multiple accounts to get more rewards, so I don't see why a person wanting mileage would not open 10 $1k (50,000 miles) accounts instead of 1 $10k (10,000 miles) accounts. Back in the day, I opted for the Egghead one when I opened my account and used it with a 5% off coupon I had at the time to get my Nikon 990. The value of your account can go down (my stocks have since gone down - but whose haven't?). It's a great time to dive into the Tech stocks, plenty of good bargains out there, stuff I never dreamed I could so many shares of... email me if you want more info about these ETRADE promos, webmaster@scoreadeal.com.
