100% CPU Usage!! Help!

I'm not sure what's going on. I noticed today that my Windows XP screensaver was running real choppy. I opened up the task manager and it says my CPU Usage is 100%. The only problem is, I'm not running anything! Can someone help me out here? I've tried rebooting and that didn't help. 😕

Damn. I've seen this NT4. It's a dos emulation prog (or shell) that goes crazy. I can't for the life of me remember what it was! If I remember, I'll be sure and post........

OK, my Windows Task Manager is showing something called svchost.exe is using 99% of my CPU. I have no idea what the hell this is. It says the User Name is SYSTEM.

Which process is hogging up the cpu? Check the processes tab in task manager.

[edit] We must've typed at the same time.

I've got four listing for this in my Task Manager. One says the User Name is LOCAL SERVICE the other says the User Name is NETWORK SERVICE and the other two say SYSTEM.

Does anyone know what this is? Could I have a virus? Or do you think some hacker has access to my PC?

Does this help?

SYMPTOMS
========

When you start a Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional-based computer that is
running Deerfield.com's WinGate program, you may notice poor speed performance.
Task Manager shows that a Svchost.exe process is taking 99 percent of the CPU
usage. When you analyze the .dll files running within that Svchost.exe, you find
the Wglsp.dll file is among the list.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur because the Wglsp.dll file can slow down performance in
the Svchost.exe process.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this behavior, rename Wglsp.dll to Wglsp.old, and then restart
the computer.

svchost.exe is a host process for other stuff, so there's no way that I know of to tell what it is directly. Try looking through your startup group in the start menu, and then if you're brave pull up regedit.exe from Start > Run... and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and see if there is anything suspicious under there.
If you find anything that shouldn't be there, delete it, and then reboot. Hopefully that will help.

I went into the registry and looked around. The only problem is, I have no idea what's supose to be there and what isn't. Is there anyway of finding out what everything is running in my Task Manager?

From the website (wingate.com):

" For two or more networked computers, WinGate proxy server is the solution for Internet sharing software.
WinGate proxy server saves money for homes, businesses and enterprises through Internet sharing,

So it's a proxy server/firewall. 😉
