I believe it's because of the insurance they offer. I don't know the specifics on the insurance though.

T-Mobiler here....

THey really try hard to get on list, but it something didnt make list of requirements of a best place to work, they didnt bother with.

Ex-T-Mobiler (RF Engineering)..they didn't have any positions when I was an intern to convert me to fulltime. Did have the free sodas/canned juice, but charged for water..

Lots of free meals, and a fun place to work (we would play football in the rows of cubicles), and very social environment. Definitely opposite my current job, but hey pay is 50% more so...

For all the TMO or exTMO out there, check out the Fake Sue Nokes Blog. If you're familiar with the exec leadership at the company it's extremely amusing. :)

I can't believe Intel isn't on that list. The benefits, wages, and perks are some of the best I've ever heard of at any company. The working environment is also extremely relaxed.

Have you actually worked or interviewed there? I almost interned there, and man....people looked like they wanted to hang themselves.....

Worked for #20 - SAS for a short time. Could get a job at #1 - Netapp if I wanted it. Not sure that I do, because I'm happy at another company that isn't on the list but I'm getting major bank to stay.

I'm not sure why we aren't on it. We get:

a whole week of vacation after the first year of service.
we don't have to worry about health care deductions since health insurance is not offered
3 sick days after the first year of service
the permission to carry firearms
the permission to smoke in our offices
free parking downtown
condom machine and shower in the bathroom

I work there right now and absolutely love it. They have some of the highest employee retention of any company (this may not be the case at some sites, but the few I've been to it is true), so it must not be that bad. So far I haven't met anyone here who dislikes their job or the company. It is relaxed like I said but still manages to be face paced though so it isn't for everyone because the work can be stressful during crunch time.

Although I will admit it's pretty horrible getting higher than average vacation time, bonuses, stock options, fully covered healthcare, and a pension (* on this statement, this year it won't be as good because of the economy, but this is true for the last two decades, so it will pick back up). There is no dress code or required time to be at work and I can work from home if I choose to on any given day. There are quarterly paid days off that don't count as vacation for team building events (the last one I went to was a Rockies game - tickets, food, and mileage paid for) as well as free food and picnics for family and friends. Ping pong tables, foosball tables, basketball court, and a workout room/showers are also a big downer. The worst part is probably the free fountain drinks in the cafeteria by the Wii connected to a 52" LCD. Sarcasm aside, I really don't see how anyone would dislike this environment. The sites in Portland and Santa Clara felt the exact same as the one I work at, and I've heard the other sites are pretty similar as well.

Oh, I almost forgot about sabbatical. Every 7 years you get 8 weeks of extra vacation time added to whatever you are currently given. Blog by a random Intel employee talking about it.

If I told you that I have heard that the boss used to hire hookers/strippers for friday afternoons you wouldn't believe me anyway. I don't think I've ever heard of coke in the office however.

Used to work for T-Mobile in corporate. It DEFINITELY wasn't a best place to work. In the time I was there my department had close to 80% turnover. It's a pretty sweet deal for the retail reps and customer service reps if you're good at your job, but working corporate there is like working for monkeys.

T-Mo employees, do the math on your bonuses. If you work your ass off to get from a 3 to a 4 and you're at around 65k a year, that comes out to something like an extra $18 a week. They talk a big game with pay for performance but the numbers don't back it up.

Oh, and TMO has been straining to make that list for YEARS. It's on the company goals and everything. They've done a lot of deliberate window dressing to try to get their name out there.

Somewhat surprised my current company isn't on there; they rock. But then again, part of why they rock is that they don't care about getting their name on that list.

All companies try to be on this list. Mathworks is trying to do it also. They made the Boston list this year too. As a compnay, man, you get awesome perks. This year, they are giving everyone at the company a 4 day cruise to Mexico. If you are not an engineer though, man, the company is horrible.

Look at C2HM HILL or whatever their name is. They are a consuting firm to the fullest. You are basically your own project manager, which is why they give everyone ownership of the company. It sounds good in theory, but for a company that size, I am surprised their methods have not backfired on them.

Not all companies make it a top goal and bonus their execs and employees on it. Seriously, this was in TMOs top six or seven goals a few years back. I haven't worked there in the year or two so I don't know about lately, but they used to do all sorts of stuff that looked good but hurt, rather than helped, the employees.

[edit] My favorite part of TMO's "hurt, not help" effect is that the people who go to PEAK from corporate are the ones who save the company from crisis. Manufacture a crisis through incompetence and work your tail off to fix it and you go to PEAK. I was sent in Feb 2006. I didn't create the crisis but it was an unnecessary one. The energy spent rewarding me to fix it would have been much better spent avoiding it, or avoiding the next five that came along.
