10.5.8 might actually be an improvement, because Safari 5 runs on 10.5.8 and is faster than Safari 4. You'll need to run LeopardAssist to get 10.5 to install though. Even if 10.5.8 with Safari 5 isn't faster, the OS is just nicer.

It can't run 10.5. Even if it could, I wouldn't recommend it. It runs like cold molasses on the G4s. I have a 1.33ghz iBook with it loaded. It's usable but slow.

There used to be a few PPC Linux distros floating around. Ubuntu had one at one point. Old Macs with a couple of USB/Firewire hard drives make pretty decent file servers.

i second the file server. the machine is just too old to be useful at anything else but a server at this point.

Of course it can run 10.5. I've already described how. I have 10.5 on ALL of my G4s, from 450 MHz to 1.7 GHz, and I as I said earlier in this thread, I prefer 10.5 to 10.4 on the G4. Both are slow, but 10.5 is nicer, and it supports Safari 5 (which is actually a bit faster than Safari 4).

BTW, my 800 MHz G4 iMac with 10.5 feels faster than my 1.07 GHz G4 iBook, because of the 7200 rpm 3.5" hard drive. However, installing Click2Flash makes browsing feel faster on both machines.

For file serving, I have no problems using afp in OS X.

Compman55,

Hey, thanks for the offer. I live in Utah. English is my second language BTW. And no, I am not morman... For folding, pentium4 is a bad idea concerning that it takes a lot of power per points per day taken. But thanks for the offer.

I still use a 10 year old PIII 850mhz laptop. Great thing that I gave it a new life when I took it out of a garbage bin at the recycling center. It does play videos, but it is getting bogged down with flash 10.1. I reinstall flash 9 to get the speed back, but sometimes Youtube prompts me to install the newest flash. Never ending cycle...
