10 ways to stay broke - forever

1) Finance everything
Live for the now. If you can get a loan or buy something on credit, do it. This should be easy; after all, your salary isn't nearly big enough to cover all your "needs."

3) Spend it all
Financial advisors tend to recommend that you "save up" for things you want. That's impractical if you want things right now — now isn't it?!

5) Buy a new car
Car models don't change much year to year, but you can't put a price on that new car smell. Ideally, you should be sporting a new ride every two or three years and financing it (of course!) for the longest term possible. If you do this for long enough, you may end up owing more than your car is even worth. That's okay — you'll look great doing it!

7) Buy more toys
A great car is important, but what you really want to shoot for is a motor home pulling a truck, pulling a trailer with two ATVs inside (and possibly a boat, too). Then you'll know you've arrived — and you can arrive on any terrain you want.

8) Pay more when you can
Rather than worrying about saving a dollar here and there, just do what is most convenient. Coupons, shopping around and waiting for things to go on sale is such a pain — and why bother for only a few dollars? After all, time is money!

10) Eat out
Treat yourself to dinner out at least a few times a week. It's convenient, it's relaxing and your time is worth something - even if you wouldn't have spent it working.

lol, these all describe one of my uncle's perfectly (and others may apply as well). He was a subprime mortgage broker. :awe:

That's the truth. I'll take out $100 from the ATM on Friday while driving home from work, will go straight home, and it will all be gone by the next morning---without me even going anywhere! They EAT money.

Johnny has a coke problem.

While I do agree on most of the items of the list, but there are some exceptions:

  1. Buy a new car – if you buy a new car, take care of it, and drive it for 10 years or more, I don't think it is a bad idea.
  2. Take a vacation – take a trip to recharge your battery or bring happiness to your family is worth it, as long as you spend within budget.
  3. Eat out – again, as long as you spend within budget and don't abuse it, nothing is wrong with it.

11: Don't file your taxes correctly ( unknowingly) , wait a few years for IRS to figure it out.

though, i am somewhat guilty of most of these ( not finance everything) and have managed to save 50K in 3 years. what do i win?

No, my kids are as straight laced as you can get. It's:

"Dad, we both need $20 for the football game tonight. I need some supplies for art class. I need to buy a book for American Lit. I'm out of tampons and contact lens solution. You didn't get home until 8pm...we want to get pizza...."

It never ends!

The best way to stay broke is to let money burn a hole in your pocket. It's not an uncommon malady. Jack London had that problem and he wound up killing himself.

I do 10 a lot but its because I fucking work a lot so in actuality I am making more money by eating out then not.

I'm to cheap to do any of these.

In my late teens and early 20's I did that kind of crap but in my 30's I get more of a thrill out if see how much more I can add to my different savings accounts.

You guys are missing the point. The goal in life is to maximize consumption. If you die with money in the bank you missed an opportunity. The optimal strategy is to die with massive negative net worth.

Time IS money, it's the suckers who don't realize this. Nothing wrong with spending some money if it'll save you time. You have to budget your time as well.

It blows my mind to read about what lengths some people go to in order to save a few dollars on Slickdeals. Like during the Touchpad firesale, people were lining up for hours before stores opened in hopes that the stores had some in stock that morning (and most of the time they didn't). They would have been better off working a minimum wage job and buying one off Craigslist.

It sucks when people live longer than expected. Hit 65, expect to die at 70, go crazy with debt. End up dying homeless at 80 because you lived 10 years longer than anticipated.

after reading all the replies to the post, I believe in about 10 years time, about half of us will be going super broke 🙁

I'm broke, so I can't even afford to do any of those things. They should have placed "have a kid" as #1.
