I have lost the check boxes in several parts of XP....

I don't know how but, the settings boxes found usually in advanced features such as in IE6 internet options\advanced and in the customize part of the start menu under properties\customize\advanced have dissappeared!

I have tried everything but a full reintsall to fix the problem. I can't find anything under MS knowledge base that leads to a resolution.

anyone out there have any solutions? $10 to the person how can solve my dilema!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Go to a command prompt (Start/programs/accessories/command prompt) and type in sfc/scanonce. Then reboot. Upon reboot Xp will scan all your windows files and replace any that are damaged or corrupted. Make sure you have your Xp disk handy. It should fix your problem.

This is about the third time I?ve seen something like this. Does anyone else feel a little offended at these people who are offering money for help? After all these forums, like fidonet, and usenet of old, are about helping and information exchange... free of charge! I visit and participate here on my own freewill and never ever expect *anything* in return. I think theses monetary offers need to be stopped before it degenerates into a one-upmanship battle for support.

I dont mind it. I wouldnt accept the money, at most Id ask the person to donate the money to a worthy cause (OpenBSD, EFF, etc). But if they want to offer the money, we shouldnt be a reason to stop them.

anyone know why when you run sfc/scanonce it seems to consume about 100Mb of hdd space which is not restored at reboot?
this has happened to me on 2 seperate occassions & both times system restore was disabled!

The System File Check tool is used with the WFP (Windows File Protection) feature.

The WFP feature provides protection for system files .
The WFP feature is implemented when it is notified that a file that is in a protected folder is modified. After this notification is received, the WFP feature determines which file was changed. If the file is protected,.the WFP feature looks up the file signature in a catalog file to determine if the new file is the correct Microsoft version. If it is not, the file is replaced.

System restore uses WFP as well, and it maintains it's own catalog too. These catalog's are big man. The System restore one is even bigger, because in essence,it has to be able to replace ANY file on the system.

My best guess, is that sfc disables System restore so that System Restore doesnt freak out when SFC does it's thing. I don't think the sfc and System restore get along. They both use the same feature (WFP) to do thier work, but they arent aware of each other anymore than SFC knows to disable System restore.

Does that make sense? Hehe , anyhow..

If you want to use a feature like this, you pay the price. You pay with HD space, processes, and memory.
At home, I just disable it.
At work it's fantastic. It's saved my butt a few times, and I don't have to sit at those boxes😀

Have you upgraded your video driver recently? I've encountered weird stuff like that due to buggy video card drivers.

thanks for the help guys...

sorry if the $10 dollar thing is a bit drastic and offensive to some. Only did it cuz I was blown off once before at another forum.

ShaggyDogg, I'll see if that works...if it does I'll keep my word.

skriefal, no, the v-driver is the same one i've been using since i set the system up.

still no luck, I tried doing, sfc/scanonce, and nothing-- still missing the boxes. Any other suggestions?

did you install something before this problem occur?

if you did, try to either uninstall it or reinstall the proggy.

Also one more thing is try reinstall internet explorer 6. it could be the problem. I am not 100% sure though but it won't hurt you to reinstall ie 6 one more time.
