While I understand your frustration on some of these points (doing the impossible and always having people ask questions) I think you are really exaggerating how bad it is.

:) Not my original post. Pulled from another geek forum. Fixed the original post to reflect that this was another's post. Sorry for the confusion.

I can give you one reason it pays to be the "computer guy" - it pays ...err...yeah.

FVCK, i just realized that i'm 'the computer guy' in my department (accounting/finance). Everytime there's a computer problem, everyone goes to *ME*.

Meh, I fix family and friends computers. They usually offer non-monetary rewards, like home-cooked meals, playing with their dog, dinner at a restaurant, something exotic, beer, etc. D1cks who don't do anything for me don't get much help beyond a reboot.

I'm the computer guy... but I work tech support in our IT Division so I can pretty much expect that...

It's funny when they expect system admins (from the US) to assist them with their computer issues when they have their own desktop support personnel on site.

A few random thoughts:

- A little bit indulgent: a more realistic response, upon revealing his computer-guy identity? "Oh... so, you over there, what do you do?" :)

- If you choose to be defined by your job, then this is exactly what you will get.
Unless you happen to be a rock star.

- Like almost everyone else here, I have a tech job that pays me well so I can have a life outside of it. This guy seems to want relish the "computer guy" moniker, while wanting to complain about it.

so the guy really is a geek. I mean, he's got know-how about computers, but is he a people person, obviously not.

proves why the industry is lookin' for IT pro's with people skills.

no one cares about how it's done, they just want someone to talk to and fix it for 'em. get the point? done deal.

that writer sure knows how to rant on about his "personal life."

people usually don't ask me computer crap anymore, since I make myself look like the kind of idiot who would rather sit and and do nothing but read books. lol

As a computer guy, I love being a programmer and not an IT guy. When something goes wrong with my computer at work, I just get the IT guy to fix on it.

Yeah but we get, "I need a program that can do (thing it needs to do) and I need it in(impossibly short time frame). Also, I only have (amount that is below cost) dollars to spend on it."

Then when it is almost done you get, "I also need it to do (added functionallity never discussed until now). That won't delay the release date right?"

I fix (or try to) for free.
I am retired and look at this as a chance to give back to the community. It gets aggravating sometimes but all in all at 5 o' clock when I put my feet up for the day I feel good about myself.
Some people need more help than others but as they begin to get it they call me less and less until finally I stop hearing from them. There is always someone else to take their place.
I do house calls and on occasion have to drag towers back to the Batcave. Gas prices have affected me more than peoples additudes.
