ever heard of Divinity school? Well, those are considered professional schools, I guess. Necessary for ordination, actually.

As for Film School, I'd say you're in good shape if it's UCLA. Film anywhere else is probably worthless.

Anyway, undergrad degrees are all equally worthless these days. Or at least, one isn't really better than the other. Today, it's generally considered the same level of achievement as graduating from High School was in the up until the 60s.

Majors have nothing to do with what you do with your career, much like GPA.

This.

I'm not sure why there's such closed-mindedness on this forum when it comes to this topic...oh wait....must be all the engineering degrees clouding reality 🙂

I love it that I switched my major from engineering to Political Science (are you pissed it's a Science?) and English. I make more money that I ever would have as an engineer.

what...? i agree you can do whatever you want but to make a blanket statement that majors have nothing to do with what you do with your career is stupid. fuck, if that's the case, why didn't i just major in PRTM?

No, really...major has nothing to do with what you do with your career.

Why this is so hard for this forum to understand is really difficult. Look at the majors of executive officers of fortune 500 companies. I keep trying to help you guys but you won't listen. Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of kids asking "so, what's your major? Well mine has a starting salary of 55K so that makes it better!!!!"

Big picture fails them.

Worthless as a career but those degrees are good for graduate schools, at least for med school

depends on the career you want. some of us don't give a shit about being a CEO.

Religion/Theology majors become pastors, missionaries, church staff, or those working for non-profit christian organizations (eg. World Vision, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Urban Ministry, etc.). For these people, their success isn't measured by money. And of course, film majors can either work in movie studios, animation studios, commercial/marketing companies. The rest I agree with.

my cousin, who got an undergrad degree in religion from Emory, is now at Duke Law School. (I'm sure the economics degree didn't hurt either, nor did the 2 years of Peace Corps...oh, and the name "Emory")

sad but true, a lot of it has to do with name.

If you think there is a degree in "Liberal Arts," you must still be in the 6th grade. 😛

Don't forget engineers and scientists. Without their academic nerdiness, we won't have the internet to post on ATOT with our computers today.

A misconception. Not all engineers are sitting around inventing the internet and making the world a better place. Most engineers are sitting around doing mundane tasks and designing forgettable, worthless things, and of course occasionally popping onto tech sites to talk shit about how they are doing such a service for humanity through their chosen profession.

You're right. The more I look into some of this stuff, it seems like the scientists (those with physics/chemistry, etc) degrees are ones inventing the useful stuff.

Exactly!

It doesn't matter what your degree or major is. You will be successful based on your action, reputation, experience, not your degree or GPA.

But the degree for the CEO is worth more than yours, which makes yours more worthless.

It's not a science, so that doesn't piss me off. It does piss me off that people think it's a science. In the end, what those people think doesn't make it a science, it just exposes their ignorance 😉

The same thing with "business science"

That's not really what I meant. What I mean is that most people do mundane, forgettable things, and you shouldn't count on any particular major to be full of exceptional individuals doing exceptional things. The world doesn't really need so many exceptional things, just enough of them. Not everybody is an Einstein. Just the way it is.

Spidey's point is that technically, any major can lead you to that position, if you want it. And he's right, it really doesn't matter. Because, in the end, undergrad degrees are equally worthless across the board in today's market.

edit: ok i'll be a bit nicer, i still think that's a stupid statement, obviously all undergrad degrees are not equal.

If that is so, then why are there majors that makes a shit load more on average than other majors? A petro engineering degree will start you off at 70k on average, while a liberal arts degree will start you off at 35k.

religion isn't worthless if you're planning on becoming a pastor. just do that and go to seminary school and you're
good to go as a pastor. I think that one of the most useless degrees is criminal justice. what a joke...

Both my degrees are on there (English and Communications) and yet I work at a company everyone would recognize and make (low) six figures. Oh well.

You do realise, to be a minister, or whatever your denomination calls it requires, typically a Doctorate in Divinity/Religious Studies.

You know chaplin's in the military? You gotta have a degree in religion.
