why do so many eat potato chips, when home made french fries is 100 times heathier? lazyness? baked potato is good too but I prefer cruncy fries, taste better.I can't afford to drink soymilk or even milk 24hrs a day, they cost so much more :(

You really do not know what your are talking about...

Potato is Healthy=Yes
Baked Potato is Healthy=Yes
Boiled Potato is Healthy=Yes
Grilled Potato is Healthy=Yes
Fried Potato (any kind of frying) is NOT healthy.

Neither do you...

The reason french fries are usually so bad for you is because the majority of restaurants use hydrogenated oils, which are pretty much the worst thing you can possibly eat. If you fry things in healthy oils such as olive oil or pure canola oil (canola is naturally very good for you, it's only when they hydrogenate it that it becomes bad) it will actually reduce your bad cholesterol levels. Unfortunately when you hydrogenate an oil it makes the oil last far longer and puts it into a much more useable form, so it's difficult to get businesses to switch to healthy oils. Hence the big debate.

Now, as far as potatoes themselves being good? They're not going to cause any bodily harm inherently, but they have an incredibly high starch content. When you are told to eat your vegetables, they are not included in your list of options :) Neither is corn, which is actually a grain, not a vegetable.

Lots of starch + little activity = lots of fat people. Potatoes and white bread and many other foods of high starch content should usually be avoided, as they are very likely to cause weight gain in sedentary people.

true but.. walmart is everywhere, local vons is not. so walmart is not going to care as it doesn't affect their business. :():

There is no walmart in San Francisco City/County. The closest one is 17.1 miles from 94122. There are Safeway stores everywhere in San Francisco, thus negating point.

I used to live in La Jolla. La Jolla Vons is one of the nicest Safeway stores. Super clean inside...

Why do so many people here have to lecture everyone on how unhealthy certain foods are? If someone wants to buy 10 lbs of taters, and at a discount no less, then all power to em. If you've ever tried to feed a large family a big meal you would see that 10lbs of potatoes can get used up in a hurry. Some one might actually benefit from this deal. Invite your friends over and have a barbeque and grill some baked potatoes.

As for the Wal-Mart buying power, you better believe it. They really do set their own prices on things. I worked at a company that sold retail items to Wal-Mart and they pretty much said this is what we want, this is when we want it, and this is what we are going to pay or we'll go somewhere else. They are pretty cutthroat and that is why most of their prices are so low. Not to mention they buy in massive amounts so that helps the buying power.
Wal-Mart wields its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customers.
Yeah right. Only so they can sell more stuff to make the largest profits they can.

mmmm ... cheap ammo for the potato launcher. Now if only someone would post a hot deal on a bulk purchase of starting fluid ...

I recommend breeding gerbils. Even though a potato will go like 5 feet further due to its increased density and weight, gerbils can reproduce fairly easily and will eat just about anything you feed them. You'll save money on ammo in the long run.

Potatoes have massive amounts starch in them. As far as "vegetable" goes they barely qualify, if at all.

Most people will eat them with things which are unhealthy (large amounts of butter, sour cream) so I'd personally steer clear.

Too much of anything is not healthy. Things that have great amount of starch other then potato are bread, wheat, corn, rice
Maybe I need to cut down on it, I've just gained 3 lbs in 2 days

Depending on how much you consume of those grains in their REFINED forms, you will be eating large amounts of nothing at all. Corn, wheats, and rices when appropriately prepared all contain tremendous amounts of additional nutrients.

The problem with the potato is that it has starch, a large amount of carbohydrate and very little of anything else of nutritional value.

Bah, we just had a deal over here for 10 pounds of real idaho potatos for $1.00 at SuperOne Foods ! That is cheaper than ramen noodles and way more filling :) In fact right now at the piggly wiggly they have the same deal for $1.20. I figure that 10lbs of potatos is worth at the very least 3.50 though.

Thats less money I need to spend on food, and more on fun + booze :)

During field tests they didn't have the same aerodynamics a well-shaped potato did. They also don't seal the tube as well, and attempts to "shape" them with pearing knives results in a useless mess. Damn things were difficult to load, since they wouldn't stay put in the barrel, and you can't just set them on the ground before loading and expect them to remain in place, unlike their potato counterparts.

Also, on impact, they just don't carry the same kinetic punch a spud will.

Could be either they're overstocked and want to get rid of them before they spoil (/sprout) or the "competition" is selling it for a couple of cents more. I'd bet if you went to a different location the price would be higher.

Walmart is always crowded. Their vegetables look a bit picked over. I give other supermarkets and Kmart a chance by checking prices out there first. They are never as crowded. If potatoes are $1 a 5# bag at Harris Teeter I would rather spend the few cents more there and walk a lot less. We need competition. I check out Costco before going to Sam's now. Much better guarantee.
