Well, I remember a well written article about walmart last year. The story of Walmart and the one gallon jar of pickles.

Heres the link.

Why so cheap? Basically, Walmart can price it however they want.

Edit: Here is one of several choice quotes.

Eventually Wal-Mart became Lovable's biggest customer. "Wal-Mart has a big pencil," says Garson. "They have such awesome purchasing power that they write their own ticket. If they don't like your prices, they'll go vertical and do it themselves--or they'll find someone that will meet their terms."

i've try to shop elsewhere but the price are double, and even triple in most cases
if they want to compete and want me to shop elsewhere as well, lower their darn prices.
be more competitive, simple ain't it?

I wonder if it's just a sales pitch, says " foods such as potato that are good source of potassium and low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke"
45 % vitamin c
21 % potassium
21 % dietary fiber
0 % fat, cholesterol or sodium

Eat as much you like, it's not junk food like potato chips.

Exactly! Another quote that was left out from that article was:
Wal-Mart wields its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customers.
Gee, that sounds like a good thing to me! After all, this is Hot Deals, isn't it?
However, I've seen similar sales before at Safeway, etc. The bad part is that they almost never have the more practical 5lb bags on sale. I did find some at WinCo recently for 88 cents, but that is the exception.
(Never thought I'd be involved in a Potato thread on AT........! That's just wrong!):Q:laugh:

I just grabbed 5 more bags yesterday, walmart employee kept staring at it. look at it like i'm crazy or maybe out of my mind buying so much yet I think their wondering " how the fcktheir going to eat all of this sht??? what a wacko!!!" :D
I keep it in my basement, its much cooler down their it will last 3 months
i'm sure its just an overstock, when it is all gone and they have a fresh stock it will be back to 2.98 per 10lbs, 1.49 for 5lbs.

I'm just pointing out that it doesn't take a Walmart to sell 99 cent sacks of potatos. Besides, Vons about 2 minutes walking distance for me. :)

Another good quote from this article....

In January 1997, Master Lock announced that, after 75 years making locks in Milwaukee, it would begin importing more products from Asia. Not too long after, Master Lock opened a factory of its own in Nogales, Mexico. Today, it makes just 10% to 15% of its locks in Milwaukee--its 300 employees there mostly make parts that are sent to Nogales, where there are now 800 factory workers.

It's Wal-Mart in the role of Adam Smith's invisible hand. And the Milwaukee employees of Master Lock who shopped at Wal-Mart to save money helped that hand shove their own jobs right to Nogales. Not consciously, not directly, but inevitably. "Do we as consumers appreciate what we're doing?" Larrimore asks. "I don't think so. But even if we do, I think we say, Here's a Master Lock for $9, here's another lock for $6--let the other guy pay $9."

With the Walmart effect, we all save money. But there is a consequence to that action. In the future, we are inevitably going to lose that income that we are currently saving.

well 99 cents is good too but 1.25 is lowest I've seen for the last 6 months. I love potato and this is my lucky days I think. next would be corns, now 4 for 1.00 is expensive, I'm waiting on 8-10 for a dollar then I'll call that a deal :)
it may take you 2 min but my car can get their in 5 I live 1/2 mile from wal-mart.
how convenient! yea their everywhere, sometime you will only appreciate wal-mart if their is no shopping place that is as convenient as they are.
car battery for 29.95 is a steal too imho. my dad would pay like 80.00 for battery at an autopart that didn't last longer then a year, at least this one last 2-3 years

I wouldn't buy computer stuff at walmart thought they just are overpriced like best buy
for 56k modem, I can get online for 6.00 shipped, thats damn good. walmart? 29.95 plus taxes

I love potato just like I love chicken. I ate chicken for my whole life since I was 1 years old. some will get sick of potato after a day, some does not. I am that kind, that never get sick of stuff I am obsessed with. Just like I am obsessed with computers, computers just sucks for some but great for others who love it.

potato is extremely healthy, the more you eat the heathier you are. It gives you the energy need to work out as well. You just have to know how to cook it properly is all.
why do so many eat potato chips, when home made french fries is 100 times heathier? lazyness? baked potato is good too but I prefer cruncy fries, taste better.
I can't afford to drink soymilk or even milk 24hrs a day, they cost so much more :(

Baked Potato is Healthy=Yes
Boiled Potato is Healthy=Yes
Grilled Potato is Healthy=Yes
Fried Potato (any kind of frying) is NOT healthy.

Potatoes have massive amounts starch in them. As far as "vegetable" goes they barely qualify, if at all.

Most people will eat them with things which are unhealthy (large amounts of butter, sour cream) so I'd personally steer clear.

Too much of anything is not healthy. Things that have great amount of starch other then potato are bread, wheat, corn, rice
Maybe I need to cut down on it, I've just gained 3 lbs in 2 days
